WoW is simply wow!
They already made comics, a couple of great commercials and even a cool line of action figures. So what’s next with their domination of the MMORPG industry? Going back to the roots I guess.
They commissioned White Wolf (makers of the famous “worlds of Darkness”, Vampire and Werewolf tabletop RPGs) to make the official World of Warcraft pen-and-paper RPG product line. Gamasutra discusses the ardous steps behind the making of the WoW RPG.

THis has been a long-time dream of mine. The closest thing perhaps was being editor-in-chief of the Ragnarok Ultimate Game Guide. So I guess I can understand the “ardous” part of the process that Luke Johnson of White Wolf and the guys at Blizzard experienced.
“In a tabletop roleplaying game, the only limit is your imagination. Players can do whatever they like. Also, the Warcraft world of your home roleplaying game isn’t tied to the “real” Warcraft world with which we are all familiar, so players can alter the world however they like. They can play a group of tauren paladins, topple Stormwind, or watch angels descend from the sky.” Johnson writes.
Here are more notes from the Gamasutra Article
Good:
- RPG books can serve as an outlet for information that would otherwise be difficult to get into the fans’ hands.
- RPG books can serve as excellent reference sources. I suspect that many people who buy our books don’t do so because they want to play the game, but rather because they want to read about the Warcraft setting.
- RPG books allow you a lot of room to create stuff that doesn’t (yet) exist in any other source.
Bad:
- You need to fill those books with content.
The World of Warcraft tabletop RPG is a hardcover book with 394 pages and costs $25. It currently has the following supplements
- Lands of Mystery (Realm guide)
- Magic and Mayhem
- More Magic and Mayhem
- Horde Players Guide
- Alliance Players Guide
- Manual of Monsters
