Sometimes, when we have tests of new games or new episodes, we hire game testers to help us. Much like other companies do. But here, the pay’s not a whoppin’, huge pile of cash. More often, we get volunteers who would gladly help us since they are just passionate about playing.
Such is the life of a video game tester. In the US, some people have taken this as a full time career. But very few really do make a living out of it. A lot see it as a dream job. Who wouldn’t? You get PAID to PLAY.
What can be better than that?
At any rate, I found an article which tackles the truths behind this field.
More after the jump…
Gunslot writes:
“Video Game Testers are a highly sought after job for many people interested in video games, computers and the internet. From first person gun shooter games to virtual reality games, game testers are a necessity. Many people see the job as getting paid for something they do for fun. While video game testing can be fun, it is a job and generally far from what people expect.”
They further enumerate the ff conclusions:
1. Game Testers Do Not Get To Play Video Games All Day.
2. Video Game Testing Can Be A Great Way To Break Into The Industry
3. Most Testers Do Not Make A Lot Of Money, However Some Do
4. Hardcore Gamers Do Not Make The Best Testers
5. Most Video Game Testers Are Very Social and Easy To Work With
6. Video Game Testing Is A Lot Of Fun

The points made in this article are quite true. Video game testings can be fun, but is a job just like any other – you are required to work a full day and this type of work can be extremely tedious. If you are interested in a job in games, there is a great site, http://GameJobHunter.com that lets you post your info for free and get connected to video game companies of all sizes across the country.
C’mon people being a game tester is not all it’s cracked up to be. It can be boring hard work. Do your research and find out what it is really about before thinking it’s such a great job.
The movie “Grandma’s Boy” follows a 30-year-old video game tester who lives with his Grandma. It’s a pretty hilarious film.
