Trillanes, Rebels Invade Manila Peninsula Hotel
November 29, 2007 - Makati, Philippines. Senator Antonio Trillanes, who was jailed before for a previous mutiny against the government, is at it again. This morning, Trillanes and his supporters marched from the Makati Regional Trial Court at around 10:30am and proceeded to the Manila Peninsula Hotel (just a few blocks away from our office). There, after talking to the media, announced that he, together with Gen. Danilo Lim.
An APC “Simba” smashed into the hotel which housed Trillanes, his gang and several mediamen who refuesed to go out. Even Philippine vice-president Teofisto Guingona went to the hotel to show his support.
As of this writing, Trillanes, Lim and their supporters have surrendered peacefully and the “Makati standoff” seemed to have been resolved peacefully.
From this coverage by Inquirer, Trillanes gives this statement about the siege; “We’re going out for the sake of the safety of everybody, for your sake because we cannot live with our conscience if some of you get hurt or get killed in the crossfire,” said Trillanes, addressing the media.
“If there’s a loser here it’s the Filipino nation because she’s [Arroyo] still there,” he added, noting that he was ready to face the consequences of his action.
Brigadier General Danilo Lim, who was with Trillanes, said this was not the end, calling the incident an “unfinished business.”

At around 4 in the afternoon, tear gas was fired by the military troops as they prepared to assualt the Manila Peninsula. A few minutes later, an APC Simba rammed the lobby of the hotel totally destroying the entrance.

It was at this point that Trillanes and his group decided to make a move to surrender to the government for “the safety of the innocent people inside the hotel”. As mentioned, there were scores of media employees who were covering the standoff and they were trapped inside too.
Meanwhile, in a shocking move, government soldiers ARRESTED members of the media which included notable personalities like Ces Drilon, Pinky Webb, and Ricky Carandang. The soldiers said that they were going to be “processed in Camp Bagong Diwa”.
ABS-CBN, via Maria Ressa, head of ABS-CBN news, has this official statement about the arrest:
“We in ABS CBN News strongly condemn the illegal arrests of our ABS CBN reporters and our colleagues in the media and decry the atrocious treatment we are being subjected to in the hands of the police. Our reporters were in the Manila Peninsula purely to fulfill their duties as journalists,” she said.
“We see no reason why our reporters have had to be handcuffed and detained along with Trillianes’s group and remind the government that their actions are a grave and serious threat to Press Freedom and to the public’s right to the Truth,” she added.

who wants to help me play catch up about this story? (everything before it; why?)

Someone please run over Trillanes with a steam roller. Doubt he’d be smart enough to sidestep it.
what Trillanes Made That Time Was So Heroic. He The Brave Man Who Fights For Freedom Of The Nation That Is in A Government Full Of Iresponsible humans who Doesnt care about other people for their own greed. Senator Trillanes Must Be Supported Continually To Make This Country Fixed .However The Fact That Army used Force to Make The Situation Calm Was Immoral, All They Have To do is Talk to each other. I think The Group Of trillanes Forced others Out Is Because They Think Its A decoy From the Military. Remember The Oakwood Mutiny? They Just Used Their Voices To Shout Their Interest And Will. why Did The AFP Used their Weapons To resolve This Problem? its Because Theyre Afraid To Fall.
It was not the military who arrested the media, it was the PNP.
This incident actually shows how badly affected the Philippine nation is by the continual brain drain we suffer from migrant labor. Only the idiots remain to run the nation while all the more qualified people are out of the country earning a living to support their families.
We’re both lucky and unlucky in that sense. Lucky because the “bad” people are too incompetent to stay long in power and unlucky because all the competent “good” people are somewhere else, their skills unavailable to the nation.
The Manila pen tragedy, in my own opinion, is nothing but a stage act-a huge pile of crap…
Obviously, President arroyo ensures her administration by sending the army to a five-star hotel when all the while, Trillanes and other encamped participants were simply ‘talking’! In our terms, PGMA is OA!!!!
Hahahahahahahaha!!!
And one more thing, if Arroyo was wise enough, No offense Madam President…Why would you send military forces to the site when there are defenseless civilians in the area?!!!…Plus, The curfew?! What makes you think that people would still have the guts to come out and be exposed to a warfreak’s scenario? Ladies and gentlemen, The President had once again violated the rights of the media…We and the nation salute You!
And the circus came to town…
And we were frightened by the clowns…
it is sad that we never learn from our mistakes. How it is so easy for us to be brain washed but so called patriotic people who feed us will exaggerated facts to enrage us. Yes it is true that there are so many corrupt politicians in our beloved country, it is also true that we need to clean out our government but what we can’t see is that those who accuse GMA of corruption are also corrupt people. the Magdalo group was paid a hefty sum of money to stage the Oakwood mutiny and they had financial backers for this latest incident as well. Gen. Lim no longer has supporters thats why he wants another chance for power. Guingona? well…. Last hura before the sun sets on him? And as for the Bishop….. I’m no scholar but I do know that under the Philippine law there is such a thing as SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. I’ll let God decide his faith…
They would have gained a bit of my respect if they fought till the end and never surrendered. Two words are left now… STUPID COWARDS!!!!
And as for the military being OA…. If they had waited and negotiated with Trillanes then they would have waited too long. If they had prolonged the incident it would have given the other groups to join the Magdalo n thus making the whole incident a success. Tama lang yun….
And as for the media… They had it coming!!!! they never listened when they were asked to leave… What, they want the PNP or the marine’s to treat them as VIPs? LT. Faeldon was able to escape because he pretended to be one of the media people. HHmmmm… I wonder….
@Marine’s Wife: Thanks for the comments and for dropping by. I’m glad that everything ended without bloodshed. For me, at the end of the day, is all that matters.
thats all that matters… that the whole thing ended without anyone getting hurt…
I totally agree with everything that Marine’s Wife said. People failed to realize that Trillanes and co. were goaded and paid to mount all those rebellions! How come the media never fully pursued that angle?
senator Trillianes was to “matapang na magtawag ng tao” to support him. But obviously only his friends supported him and unlike the people power a lot of people came. :)) hahaha.
