There’s been a lot of buzz and speculation about a so-called Thundercats movie. Rumors have been circulating the web that the movie is being produced by Warner and is slated for an early 2008 release.
Well, I loved the cartoon series as a kid and I can’t wait to see my heroes, Lion-O, Panthro and the rest on the big screen. So I did a little research and I thought you guys would be interested to know more about it.
According to this unofficial site, the movie will star Mathew McConnaughey as Liono, Ed Harris as Mumm-Ra, Tea Leoni as Cheetara, Wesley Snipes as Panthro, and David Carradine as Tigra.

Great casting. But read on.
But when I visited the IMDB entry for the movie, it said that the movie will be released in 2010 and that info is only available for imdb pro users, meaning I’d have to pay to view it. No thanks. There are more ways to find info on the web.
A quick google search revealed that Esquire has an apparent behind-the-scenes article but the actors in that feature were Hugh Jackman and Jessica Simpson. The only juicy thing I got from that coverage was the part about Jessica; “For the role of Cheetara, co-star Jessica Simpson was covered in head-to-toe cheetah spots that, at times, didn’t provide much camouflage.” The photo (below) stinks of Photoshop and cries “hoax” though. They claim that the Iron Man director is the same one doing Thundercats.

Meanwhile, IGN has posted an article dated October 10, 2007 saying that videogame veteran Jerry O’Flaherty is tasked to direct the coming movie. O’Flaherty worked as art director on Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, and Command and Conquer. He had reportedly been looking to jump into the film biz and mulled several projects before settling on Thundercats. “It feels like a natural thing for me to step into,” he told Variety. “Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the videogame experience.”
Lastly, to add to the confusion, here’s a youtube video of a “trailer”. It’s fan made, of course.
So, you be the judge. Will we ever see a Thundercats movie soon?
