The President’s Funds

Why would anyone want to be President of the Republic of the Philippines?

Would stress and a paltry P60,000 salary be enough to dissuade anyone? Perhaps not. Why would political candidates spend BILLIONS of pesos just to be the most powerful person on the country?

Maybe the pork barrel sounds reasonable. There is an unholy amount of monies at the personal discretion of the chief executive. I’ll show that after the jump…

THE PRESIDENT’S PORK BARREL

According to this source, here’s a listing of the funds which can be disbursed at the discretion of the country’s highest official;

Kindly note that the total is in THOUSANDS OF PESOS. That means that the President has around 59.2 BILLION at his/her disposal. If you look at a 10% rip-off (corruption rate), that’s still a potential take home of around 6 BILLION PESOS for the entire term of office or 1 BILLION for every year of tenure (roughly around 2.7M every day in office).

Whew! That’s massive. You can forget about the 60K monthly salary and give that to your PSG driver in tips, right? According to a simple calculation that I did, the entire salary of the president’s six-year term is only 0.00061% of the pork barrel.

Here’s more. The President DOES NOT NEED to report on how most of these funds were appropriated. The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) says that “Confidential and intelligence funds, along with other discretionary funds, do not undergo the usual auditing procedures.” That simply doesn’t sound right.

So, whoever wins, if this system is still in place, corruption is as easy as pie.

Still believe in their promises?

Vote wisely. Thanks!

    I think lot’s of the citizens of the country wouldn’t be voting wisely because Noynoy seems to be the one who will win the election even though he is probably the least suitable person for the post =.= Erap is even more suitable to be the president based on previous tenures, projects and accomplishments as a government official or as a citizen who did something to make the lives of the citizen of our country better. If the citizens will vote wisely most likely Gordon, Villar or Gibo will win but obviously that isn’t the case. I can’t believe lots of people are going to vote for Noynoy simply because he is the son of Ninoy and Cory.I can’t believe that the citizens of our country is prepared to disregard the fact that Noynoy hasn’t impacted the country in any big way.. no laws made.. no major political achievements.. no known real effort to do actions to help the citizens of the country.. and I don’t know about you guys but I think I remember seeing him asleep in several of senate hearings.. good God please save the Philippines.. please make Noynoy prove me wrong :( ..

    ======
    I’m not a Noynoy hater by the way it’s just well i’m really so disappointed that he is about to become our president when we were given by God 3 extremely competent people to choose from to be our president (Gibo, Gordon and Villar) this election unlike last time when GMA was really the only real competent leader who ran for president.

    ewww anti-gloria… sorry but she’s way better than erap, fvr and cory.. no offense…just my 2 cents… napakatindi ng epekto ng bad media nowadays… lalo na dito sa pinas, uber exposed ung opposition na patay gutom ng pansin, panay panira sa mga nkaupo… in my opinion… nasiraan tlaga not only gloria but also ex-president bush ng USA sa grabe ng epekto ng bad media in present time… then comes along his/her successor na akala mo parang messiah na tga.pagligtas >,< in my opinion, good presidents but bad timing kung kelan cla nkaupo and especially the people around them..

    You made a mistake. If that thing is in millions PHP, tehn it’s not 59.2 billion. It’s 59.2 TRILLION.

    You’re right. I stand corrected. It should read “thousands” of pesos. My bad. Apologies. Thanks for the correction
