The Benefits of Gaming

April 28, 2008 · Filed Under General, Musings, Online, Gaming

Sorry for the scarce number of posts these past few days. Veeerrry hectic week at the office with all these deadlines and rush for some major projects.

Meanwhile, here’s something for everyone to reflect on.

What are the benefits of gaming in general?

For me, the first thing that comes to mind is “de-stress”. Games offer me an avenue to release tension and relax after a stressful day at the office. For instant fun, it’s usually the PSP for me. At home, I can get more tension off with either a brainless console game or some killing action via my PC with FPS or MMORPGs. If I’m bored, I try to practice some hard song off Guitar Hero.

More after the jump.

Here are other benefits of video games

  1. Stress Release - I already talked about this so we’ll skip to the next one…
  2. Have Fun - Quite obvious, eh? Games are there for you to have fun. If you’re too serious and are NOT having fun, ask yourself why you’re gaming in the first place.
  3. Beat Goals - You have to set goals in order to become successful. Games allow one to actually test their own limits. Some say that you’re only trying to beat yourself. Could be…
  4. Meet new friends - The best games are the ones designed for multi-player. That’s why all the MMORPGS and multiplayer games have defined this generation of games. The best thing about going online is that you meet a lot of people, who eventually become your friends. Meeting them in real life is added gravy.
  5. Increase your dexterity - Studies have shown that games increase your eye-hand coordination and that gamers have faster reflexes than those who do not. I won’t be surprised if one day, it could save your life. But that may be stretching it…

These are just 5.

There are a lot more, if you come to think about it.

I prefer gaming over crossword puzzles and mathematical exercises as tools against Alzheimer’s and other diseases. Studies show that people who don’t keep their minds active are more at risk compared to those who do. Yes, gaming does make you smarter.

Games let’s time pass by. While your playing it would seem to yourself that you’re just playing for an hour but instead it was already 5hours. It takes away a lot of boredom in a day (specially if your doing nothing). Most high-school people during summer has nothing to do so playing games would also benefit this kind of people.

Another benefit would be that the game you’re playing can even be related to your future job. I guess an example of that would be Wauks.

Idle hands and minds are the devil’s playgrounds, so they say. Not that I have a problem with the devil, but hey, if it keeps us thinking and constantly improving, I’m for it.
