[ technology ] Goodbye Netscape

Oh noes! One of my favorite IE “alts”, Netscape Navigator is going the way of the dinosaur. AOL, current owners of Netscape have announced that they will no longer be providing support for Netscape effect February 1, 2008.

AOL acquired Netscape in 1999.

Here’s what the folks at AOL said:

“We’ll continue to release security patches for the current version of the browser, Netscape Navigator until February 1, 2008. After February 1, there will be no more active product support for Navigator 9, or any previous Netscape Navigator browser. This includes Netscape v1-v4.x, Netscape v6, Netscape v7 Suite, Netscape Browser v8, and Netscape Navigator/Messenger 9. “

Meanwhile, they are urging their users to support Mozilla - the browser I am currently using. Also, the Netscape site will be retained and will act as a web portal.

Goodbye Netscape! I had fond memories with you.

R.I.P.

Netscape is the reason why I boycott all Micro$oft products, except for the OS. Mind you, all my software, games or office programs, are either true freeware or original, no pirate copies. I still use my Win98 original license in my older PC but bought a licensed Vista with my new one.

What happened to Netscape was unfair. The developers of Netscape poured time and talent into the product and then Micro$oft reversed engineered it and called their copy-cat product Internet Explorer and made IE integral to all subsequent Windows versions. What about compensation to Netscape developers’ time and work and intellectual property?

Micro$oft must be broken into smaller units so that it will not be able to menace free society and free enterprise the way it does now.

@ GM Tristran: Feel free to use it. I don’t own that and copied it from someone else. Down with Micro$oft! Down with American Imperialism! (oops) :D

Its sad to see netscape go. Looking at the brighter side there are so much in stored for us ahead. On the contrary let us welcome the very promising navigator-th mozilla.
