Is It All About the Graphics?

Lately, I’ve been musing over how huge the hardware requirements for video games are. Want to play a game such as Crysis? Then you’ve got to bleed cash for you to enjoy it. How about HD gaming? Surely, you need a high-end console such as the Xbox 360 and the PS3. But some consoles have design problems and are likely to fail. Which means that your investment is not guaranteed for the long haul.

The question then is: is it now all about the graphics? It is such a high priority among developers and end users? Are graphics the end all or be-all of games? Whatever happened to gameplay innovations such as the games of the good-old-days: Zelda, Mario, etc.

And then, whatever happened to good storytelling and gameplay? Is it now second-rate to graphics?

Xbox 360 Fails 67% of the Time

Egad! Now that I’m in the market for a new console, things are looking bad for my first choice – the Xbox 360. According to this poll by Cheap Ass Gamer, some people have reported that their Xbox 360 fails 67% of the time. And some have even reported not single, but repeated failures.

I can vouch for this, from the third person point of view though. A couple of my friends and officemates have indeed reported failures of their own Xbox 360s. Most notable causes are from the heat.

Alone in the Dark Tech Demo

When it comes to new and great ideas in gameplay and realism, Alone in the Dark is the game to beat.

Alone in the Dark was one of the pioneers in the survival-horror-action genre and now the guys at Atari are well on their way to revolutionize how we play games. AitD will provide a complete next-generation, action-packed experience within a highly detailed, free-roaming environment, featuring a mixture of astonishing real-time physics and full environmental interaction. All this in HD! Sweet!

One of my favorite new twists to gameplay is the cool inventory system. You view your jacket (see the photo below) and you get stuff in real time (even while the baddies beat your sorry a$$)

Microsoft to Make Blu-Ray for Xbox?

Just recently, I told you that HD-DVD is already dead when Toshiba announced that they are giving up on that format. It’s also a known fact that the Xbox 360 is currently supporting the HD-DVD format.

Now, to make matters worse, Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft said that there is a good possibility that they will go for the Blu-ray format.

“We’ve already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on,” said Ballmer at the Mix08 conference.

“Toshiba has moved on. We’ve moved on, and we’ll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense,” he said.

An Evil Parent’s Xbox 360 Prank

Show this to your parents… it might be helpful.

When this video was featured as an entry at Engadget, it enraged a lot of readers.

You go see for yourself. For me, this is really wrong. The poor kid, Jonathan, would have had anxiety attacks and could be scarred for life (psychologically). So, when you guys grow up and have kids, don’t ever, ever try to do this your child.

Meanwhile, Jonathan’s brother claimed that they eventually GOT HIM an Xbox 360. But that proof was never uploaded to youtube.

A lot of the concerned readers who commented at the original post even tried to donate or buy the poor kid an Xbox 360 for Christmas.

Guitar Rising: Guitar Hero for REAL Guitars

Last weekend, me and my officemates showed someone who knows how to play a real guitar how to play Guitar Hero 3. Yes, there seems to be some sort of connection between skill in real life and with the “fake guitar” of the game. The dude then said, “It would be wonderful if this game could actually be used on a real guitar!”. Agree.

Which made me searching. True enough, I found Guitar Rising – which, according to their site is “a music video game where the player plays a real guitar as cued by the game’s visuals. Following rock music sequences and streaming notes, players play guitar melodies and rhythms. Beginner difficulty levels are designed for non-guitar players and hard difficulties will challenge experienced guitarists.”

Real guitars!!! Sweet!

A video is better than words. So, here goes:

Assassin’s Creed, developed by French gamemaker UbiSoft came out as the Best Action Adventure game for 2007. This honor was bestowed by the prestigious game site, GameSpot.
