The Fine Art of Video Game Writing

During the Game Developers Conference or GDC 2008, which is currently ongoing (Feb 18 – 22, 2008) at San Francisco, producer and editorial director for Vicarious Visions, Evan Skolnick gave a tutorial/talk on Effective Game Writing.

At this lecture, he gave practical tips on developing story and cited specific examples as well as comparing writing for video games to film writing.

Skolnick said that “”For every medium there are conventions, challenges and pitfalls… new conventions, traps to avoid. Games have them, of course. In my opinion 80% of good game writing is just good writing. That last 20% can be difficult to solve. When you go to the rest of the talks on writing, they’ll be [focused on that last 20%]. Writing Better News

I always try to install practical writing tips when I meet and talk with my community managers. These guys are in charge of general news and announcements in their game’s primary website and forums. Much of these are gleaned from the years of experience I had as a professional writer and also from being a community manager.

The following habits can also be synced into web-writing. The only additional knowledge and skill that you need is SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This is practically making certain that the keywords that you “protect” are always in your headline, blurb or first few paragraphs.

The same can be said for blog-writing.

Just follow the following notes, tips and guidelines and you’ll be on your way to writing better articles and being on top of Google and other search engines.

GM T Group Writing Project – Week 5

Now, it’s time for Week 5 of the GM Tristan Group Writing Project/Contest.

The theme for this week was The Positive Values of MMORPG: How Gaming Made Me a Better Person.

The past week was really tough for me and the pRO GM team. Really hectic, filled with issues and uber-stressful. Thanks to kind messages of people like SniperAngel who was there at the LUG office last week. Too bad I wasn’t able to say “Hi”. I’ll make it up to you guys next time k? (merienda? hehehe)

Anyways, there are great entries for this week. This project is now in it’s last week and soon we’ll all be voting for the winner. Apologies for not posting this kahapon because of I was busy with the issues and problems with RO and other games.

gmtristan.com Looking For Contributors

Dear Community,

I am opening this site to contributions from fans, readers and players. I would want this to be a venue for others to express their own opinion (and thoughts) about current events, issues and maybe even share tips and experiences in the online gaming industry.

Also, if you have a blog or a website, it would be a good opportunity for you to promote it via this site.
