Will Onlive Be The Future of Video Gaming?

Sometimes a simple idea will change the way we live (or play).

Imagine this – you either have a TV set or a PC (or Mac). Second, imagine that it’s an old PC or laptop – something slow and couldn’t possibly run games such as Left 4 Dead or Crysis.

Now, there’s a new technology that allows you play the games via a service called Onlive. Onlive claims that you don’t need all the processing power: RAM, harddrive or even video card juice, the Onlive services computes all the graphics algorithims in THEIR server and just streams it to you. Thus, you DO NOT need a fast computer or even the latest consoles such as the Xbox 360 or PS3 to enjoy all the games you wish to play. All you need is a (fast) Internet connection and an account.

If this becomes succesful, it WILL revolutionize the gaming industry.

Oh, did I tell you that downloads will also be kept at a minimum? Read on….

It was a simple black-and-white screen in a dark blue plastic casing and all one had to do was catch the objects thrown in the air. The game’s speed would keep accelerating and once you hit 999 points, the game would start over from the beginning.”

Currently, she’s playing Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII on her PSP.

Playing the Male Card to Explain an Addiction

This is a guest post by Kelly Kilpatrick

How often have you found yourself exasperated to the point of wanting to throw something when your boyfriend, spouse, son or any other male you know glues themselves to their gaming console and is oblivious to what you’re saying and to your very existence? Take heart, for you’re in the company of almost every other woman in the world. But if you’re hoping to get together for a good ol’ bitching session about the bad boys and their mean machines, you’re out of luck ‘cause the men were just given the most wonderful reasons possible to explain their addiction logically – we’re just genetically designed that way!

We all know that Crysis topped a lot of charts. In fact, it can crush your PC rig to its limits just by the sheer video and hardware requirements of the game.

Now, execs over at Crytek said that Crysis is THE most pirated game.

“We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable.” said Crytek president Cevat Yerli.

The Fine Art of Video Game Writing

During the Game Developers Conference or GDC 2008, which is currently ongoing (Feb 18 – 22, 2008) at San Francisco, producer and editorial director for Vicarious Visions, Evan Skolnick gave a tutorial/talk on Effective Game Writing.

At this lecture, he gave practical tips on developing story and cited specific examples as well as comparing writing for video games to film writing.

Skolnick said that “”For every medium there are conventions, challenges and pitfalls… new conventions, traps to avoid. Games have them, of course. In my opinion 80% of good game writing is just good writing. That last 20% can be difficult to solve. When you go to the rest of the talks on writing, they’ll be [focused on that last 20%]. It’s challenging, there are lots of pitfalls with game writing, such as authorial intent versus player agency…”

Games Being Donated to US Troops in Iraq

I always thought that my current workload is stressful – managing people, the games and coordinating with developers, etc. But there’s nothing more stressful than being in Iraq, donning a US Army uniform which makes you a walking target for terrorists. And that’s where video games come into the picture. Ain’t nothing like lounging in the couch with a good FPS or action game, eh?

Oh well, good thing that Cheap Ass Gamer has a “Donate Games to the Troops in Iraq” campaign. If you want to help, just send it to the address specified at their site.

Magnavox Odyssey: First Video Game Console

Yeah, we all love the Xbox and the Wii. And some people (like me) still love the PS2. I don’t think I can say much for the PS3 (yet).

While, we marvel at the graphics and capabilities of today’s console, you will want to hear about a not-so-famous one, the Magnavox Odyssey.

The Magnavox Odyssey is the worl’d first video game console. Launched in May of 1972, it was there even before the more famous Atari 2600 was (1976). The Magnavox Odyssey prototype, known as the “Brown Box”,is now at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

Wii and Halo 3, Top Sellers for 2007

It’s hands down.

There’s no stopping the phenomenon that is the Nintendo Wii when it comes to hardware. And when we talk about software, Halo 3 takes the cake for 2007′s big money makers.

MSNBC said that “more video games were sold in the U.S. in 2007 than in any other year, with retail sales hitting $17.94 billion”.

This attests to the fact that video games, both hardware and software are really into the mainstream. But there’s still room for growth even as demand continues to increase and developers and publishers scramble to get more out of the pie this year.
