To celebrate the release of the first Star Wars Blu Ray collector’s set, the UK turned the BT Tower into the World’s Largest Lightsaber.

It took 60 4,500-watt lights — standing 1.3m high and weighing 124kg — installed at the top of the iconic tower to send a bright beam of blue light skywards and made the 189m tall cylindrical building look like a lightsaber.

C3P0 actor, Anthony Daniels was the one who pressed the ceremonial power button.

Wohooo! Long weekend. Time to catch up on my model kit projects. It’s easy to just buy action figures or statues and pop ‘em inside your display case at home or in the office. But to me, it becomes fulfilling when you do it yourself.

Anyways, this here is part of my haul of Star Wars 1:6 scale vinyl kits. I already finished Darth Vader, Han Solo and Princess Leia. Both R2-D2 and this one, C3P0 will go in simple diorama which will be a nice addition to my Star Wars collection…

After the standard assembly, I primed the kit and then attached the lead “pistons”. Detail on this kit is amazing! After the primer, I then gave it 2 coats of Gold chrome paint (RJ London can spray). Once done, it got 2 coats of clear lacquer to give it a semi-sheen. And then it’s dry brushing the chrome parts to give it added detail;

Once that was done, it was time to build the base.

This simple dio is just 2 pieces of CD case glued together. I dabbed some Rugby contact cement on top to give it texture and then added rocks and simple metal part from scrap. After the primer, it was sprayed flat black. I will then proceed to dry brush this once it dries…

About a month ago, I started work on the Princess Leia 1:6 vinyl model kit. I decided to do this project right after finishing the Darth Vader, also in vinyl. I guess I prolly learned a thing or two on that project so I can apply it to Leia. This is my first real, flesh/human model kit and one of my frustration is doing the eyes. I don’t believe I did a fine job with the eyes on this one but as they say “practice makes perfect”.

This Princess Leia isn’t as detailed as some of the kits I found on the web (for reference) but I guess it’ll do. Btw, this is part of our sci-fi haul and I’m doing my best to finish all the kits there so I can go back to Gundams and military models.

(Above) After cleaning and washing the kit on warm water and dishwashing liquid, it was time to sandpaper it and do some repairs and fixes. The seams were done with plastic putty and re-sanded.

(Above) Here are the hands after being primed.

Leia gets her first two layers of flesh coat via airbrush. I started with the darker color first and worked it up to the lighter one, doing highlights on the forehead and cheeks.

I can-spray the body with white and then glue the painted hands and the gun. Lighter is there as a size reference

Here’s the model with some detailing on the face left to be done. Looking good so far.

Finally completed my Darth Vader 1/6 scale vinyl model kit. This took around 2 weeks to build, clean assemble and paint. The challenge with this project was that there were around 3 to 4 “variants” of black that was used for the kit; flat black, semi-gloss, and gloss.

Here’s a dream home theater setup as a tribute to Star Wars. It looks like the inside of a ship complete with lifesize replicas of R2-D2 and C3PO.

The Most Awesome Home Theater In The Galaxy

It has life-size R2-D2 and C-3PO replicas that talk to the audience (I assume 3PO stays quiet during the actual screenings), a ceiling featuring a three-dimensional fiber optic scarscape, and a motorized pocket door that serves as the entrance, just like you’d find on a Corellian Cruiser.

The designers, Acoustic Innovations of Boca Raton, FL, didn’t want the gear to break the intergalactic illusion, so they hid it: acoustic panels on the walls were designed to look like starship doors, equipment racks turn 180 degrees, so they can be concealed by a concave cabinet, and the Runco DLP projector that makes the magic happen is hidden inside a soffit in the rear of the room. The screen is a curved, anamorphic 107-inch display from Stewart Filmscreen, which is acoustically transparent to accomodate the five speakers behind it.
