The Power of Social Networks

Recently, when I was going around Internet cafes to check on our collaterals and games, I noticed that Facebook users are growing. They’re active in the checking their walls and responding to friend status and what-not. It may be that Friendster, once the proud owner of Philippines’ social network scene, is feeling the brunt of this of this market change.

So why the growth? It could be that Facebook has a better interface (hey! They change it everytime… most likely they do FGDs and hire experts to improve upon the interface every so often.)

Online Games and Social Networks

As part of the online gaming industry, my team and I are constantly trying to solve an elusive mystery – should online game developers (or publishers) create their own social networks? Or should they just play with the big boys, Friendster, Orkut, Myspace, Multiply and Facebook (to name a few)?

According to Matt Slagle, who wrote a piece on USA Today, “Social and gaming networks, once considered polar opposites, are cross-pollenating as online interactions replace prime-time TV and other, more traditional media experiences”.

It is for this very reason that I think there is synergy between these two mediums and that we in the gaming industry should learn to foster good ties with social networks.
