Emil Chronicles Online Philippines

As one of the games announced at Level Up LIVE 2008, I present to you – Emil Chronicles Online or ECO. ECO is published by GungHo Online Entertainment, of which Gravity (the makers of Ragnarok Online) is a part of their group now.

Basically, the “Emil” are the humans. The game features their “Chronicles” and the adventurers of the Emil and the various other races within the game. I especially like the cell-shading aspect of the design. It’s sooo cute! Meanwhile, do you know that there’s a REAL movie house inside the game where you can watch anime and other vids? Cool, huh?

ECO details after the break…

Video: Addiction, Divorce and RMT in MMORPGs

Last February, I featured part 1 of this video from Markee Dragon. In part 2, Markee shares his own expriences about addiction, divorce and RMT (Real Money Trading) in MMORPGs.

Enjoy!

The Tao of Game Design

Yesterday, while thumbing through Gamasutra, I came upon a very interesting (and enlightening) post penned by Veteran educator and game designer Ernest Adams entitled The Tao of Game Design.

In that piece, Ernest compares the Asian discipline of Tao to designing games.

Get Rich Quick

The title above either attracts or repels.

Let’s put this into the context of games. At first, broken games or MMORPGs that offer you a get-rich-quick scheme or a level-fast-now scheme attract players like bees to pollen. But most are doomed to fail.

The average player always sees the false value of a game where you can bot and just level up at the fastest possible time, acquire all the gold by duping and kill anyone with a single hit. Pinoys, by nature, hate the grind. Compared to our other Asian brothers, we just don’t have enough patience. We want the quick and dirty, level-me-now-to-max mentality.

On the onset, this looks like a good thing. You can bot or buy a stupid third party program and then just take a nap and watch your character get all powerful.

Download Games Like A Pro

I’ve been getting a lot of questions and complaints about game downloads not working, being corrupted or failing to install.

So I decided to write a short and sweet article about how to download games properly. First off, before you comment on the other download articles and posts, be sure to check out our single source for all LEVEL UP GAMES DOWNLOADS. Some of the links in the old posts may already be dead or have been updated with a newer patch or version.

Meanwhile, the big scoop on how to download after the jump

How to defeat Lag

This is an old, original article of mine reprinted here. It was first posted at my original blogger site March 24, 2007. Am reposting it here since I just got a lot of complaints about lag and connectivity issues. I hope this will help.

Picture this:

You and your buddies just visited your local, boring NPC to stock up on pots and stuff and head out to the spot where the Boss respawns. It’s 5 minutes till the bastich appears… a few noob groups are hovering like vultures in the horizon.

Purists vs. Hardcore

I remember back in the old days when me and my old group of tabletop-RPG friends would debate about whether or not MMORPGs are complimentary to traditional pen-and-paper. Most pen-and-paper hobbyists would classify themselves as ”purists” of the gaming revolution and would look at MMORPGs as something vile.

Our debates back then would focus on topics such as how immersive MMORPGs can be, how dull and boring they are (since they are “linear” in a way). Some of my friends would argue that MMORPGs are the onset of technology. It is perfectly natural for gaming to adhere to the rapid gains in technology and the internet.

This debate still lingers on on forums and some blogs, let’s try to list down a few of the finer points. That, after the break…

Gaming Legends

When we talk about “Legends”, these guys are of course, larger than life. People look up to them as role-models of the community. They idolize them due to their achievements, respect their views and often, follow them to the “ends of the earth.”.

These gamers may closely epitomize King Leonidas of the 300, one who will be the first one in a fight and the last one to leave.

What does it take to become a “Legend” inside the MMORPG or game that you play? Is it for everyone? In fact, is it easy at all?

That and more after the break

Game Management Wisdom

For the almost 5 years I’ve been in the gaming industry, I learned a lot of things. How to do things right and, in the course of handling the different aspects of the games and the business, I also learned what NOT to do.

During these times, experience has been my greatest teacher. I’ve had a lot of mentors too. Those who told me how to do the “corporate” stuff like juggling numbers, managing people, deliverables, to them – I all owe my sincerest gratitude. But like what I said before, failures are also something to embrace. Why? Because you learn from them. The taste of success will be sweeter if you get up when you fall down.

D&D Launches 4th Ed

The much anticipated Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition was launched last June 7, 2008 with Wizards of the Coast, official publishers of game declaring that day as “Game Day”. A special game day website was made by WotC so that fans and players can hook up with one another to try out the new ed of D&D.

Without D&D, none of this MMORPG or fantasy gaming would have existed. Also, being an old vet of pen-and-paper RPGs, I’m quite excited about the launch too, having heard that the 4th Ed takes D&D gaming into the virtual and online environment with such tools as the D&D Insider.

After the break, I’ll show you what’s new in D&D 4th Ed and also a special video feature by G4TV with an interview with head designer and WotC R&D Director Bill Slaviseck.
