The Art of Begging (in MMORPGs)

By now, if you ever play online games, you’ve most likely encountered beggars who ask anything from in-game cash to loot or even items.

Sadly, these types of players are constant in an online game and MMORPGs.

But why do they do it? A lot of people argue that if these beggars just spend their time doing quests or farming, they’ll get more. But there may be a deep, underlying factor why they beg. Perhaps they make a lucrative “business” just standing in the city streets, approaching mid and high-level avatars and asking for money.

Let’s examine the probable reasons why - after the jump

The Young vs. the Old in MMORPGs

While blog hopping in www.mmorpg.com, I came upon a post by Bardoc entitled the “Kids vs. the Grown Ups“. Since I also blog there, I decided to look into it.

It was an interesting post. So Interesting that it prompted me to write my own version based on Bardoc’s insights.

First, let’s see what he wrote.

“If your (sic) younger the older members seem to act like they are owed something. That they need you to do it their way or when they want you to. For the older members it looks like the young members don’t have any respect for or ownership in the guild. They are simply there to get their loot.”

Our CEO, Ms. Jane Walker is currently at China this week for the ChinaJoy 2007 event. Following the E3 in U.S. , and the Tokyo Game Show in Japan , ChinaJoy is designed to become another great event of the world’s game industry. It is meant to “strengthen domestic game supervision in China , actively regulate the Chinese market, and rigorously fight against piracy, in order to encourage and support the development and the sales of legal game products.”

Ms. Walker is there to look at new content and other alternate titles for the Philippine market, of course. While there, she had the opportunity to be interviewed by mmosite.com who called her a “very charming lady”.

Knowlede is Power: Getting Info about your MMORPG

Sometimes, as an MMORPG player, you will get invites to join a CBT (closed beta testing) for a new game… for example, Perfect World or (soon) Ragnarok 2.

When this happens and you have a new game, the difference between being a n00b and becoming an “expert” lies in the knowledge and information that you get for that new game. Whether you do it via web research or via constant playing, information is key and like the old cliche – “knowledge is power”, holds true.

This short article will hopefully help guide on where to get key bits of information to become a better player…

South Korea to Tax RMT

Last June 26, 2007, the South Korean government office called the Korean National Tax Service (which equivalent to the US IRS or the Philippine BIR) has announced that they are imposing a Value Added Tax (VAT) to RMT (Real Money Trading) in online games.

Often called “PHP Trading” here locally, the new rule is summarized as below:

“Sellers who do between 6 and 12 million won/half year in business (USD 13,000 or PHP 637,000) will have VAT auto applied by transaction’s middle-man. Sellers who do more than 12 million won/half year in business will need a business license and will pay the tax by themselves”

The Week That Was (in Level Up) II

As Waukeen would say; it’s another “exciting” week!

And all I can say is… what a week it was.

For starters, both our blogs got record-breaking comments and angst via our posts about the Ragnarok Dupe Item issue. Everything was supposed to be rolled back to June 1 since duping became rampant. But the priority now is to find a PERMANENT solution to the issue.

Here at LUG, we all LOVE Ragnarok… it’s the reason why we’re here. It’s a success and we aim to keep it that way. Of course, our biggest asset is the community and we want to serve them to the best of our ability.
