Farmville For Real. Run A Real Farm Online

Farmville may be the biggest Facebook game to date. And Zynga’s laughing all the way to the bank.

But do you know that you can run a REAL farm online? You heard me right. Britain’s National Trust has established MyFarm, in which “A real estate in Cambridgeshire, England has been set aside to be “run” by 10,000 “farmers”, who each month will determine via voting what gets built, which crops are sown, basically anything and everything to do with running a real, functional farm.”

Let’s Talk About Closed Beta Testing

A lot of players often ask me why the need for a CBT, and most importantly, why would publishers wipe or delete all the characters on the CBT test server?

This short post attempts to clarify the reasons why. Hopefully, everyone (who reads this and shares) will have a new idea on why gaming companies have to do CBT.

How To Know If You’re Addicted to MMORPGs

Addiction to anything is bad. Even games.

It’s a disease. A lot of people think they’re not addicted until it’s too late. Then they have problems with family, work or school. I’ll be the first dude to say that even TOO MUCH playing is a bad thing. Yes, even if I work in the gaming industry. We all have to prioritize the important things too… work, school and family, among other things.

According to this study on netaddictions.com, here are the symptoms to know if you’re already addicted to MMORPGs.

Free Food For Zynga Employees

From a small-time developer, Zynga is now poised to take over the world. Zynga is best known for being the developers and publishers of the hottest Facebook games like Farmville, Cafe World and Mafia Wars. Combined, they have millions of happy gamers logged in to their games (60 million, according to their December 2009 Press Release). Currently, Farmville is the biggest Facebook game. I also did some short computations on how much Farmville makes in a month on a previous post.

Recently, Zynga acquired Challenge Games, the developers of the growing Facebook hit, Warstorm. But what’s more exciting is that Zynga provides FREE MEALS throughout the week for its employees, aside from other benefits of course. Sure is great to work there!

The Future of MMORPGs: F2P or Item Mall?

A couple of days ago, mmorpg.com managing editor John Wood moderated a panel discussion which tackled the hotly-contested topic “What is the future of online gaming? Free-to-play or Item Mall (micro-transactions)?” at the recently concluded GDC 2008 expo.

John’s guests included:

  • Jack Emmert from Cryptic Studios
  • Matt Miller from NCsoft
  • Ray Muzyka from Bioware
  • Min Kim from Nexon
  • Rob Pardo from Blizzard

It’s interesting to note what each executive has to say about the distinction between each business model and how it will affect our hobby and the industry.

I took it upon myself to summarize the discussions for your reading pleasure.

Generate a Cool Name for your MMO Character

How many times have you met either a noob, or a nuisance character named ^^{{jam345}}^^ or something to that extent? Isn’t it annoying?

For some people, especially the “purist” gamers who are into “role-playing”, they’re bothered by common and lame names devoid of creativity.

If you’re stuck without a name for your MMORPG character, don’t worry, help is here. I’m going to show you several online tools which you can use to create a name worthy of a Bard’s poem.

The Longest You Ever Played for an MMO?

You’ve probably heard about the infamous news about a gamer in China dying of exhaustion, right? Of course, the poor guy gamed non-stop for 3 days.

When I say “longest”, this refers to the longest length of time one has ever played an MMORPG. I doubt if there’s a Gamer’s World Record for this. But I have heard local stories and urban legends here (from the Philippines). To start off, gaming non-stop for extended periods of time is NOT HEALTHY – look dude, someone died, okies?

Second, I know gamers are competitive but there IS life outside gaming. Top of my mind, get a friggin’ girlfriend *winks*.

The definition of “long” is different depending on who you ask.

“Pilots” in MMORPGs

A compleat online/MMO gamer is uber-competitive. If you miss a day in leveling up, your competitors (the other players, factions or guilds) have an advantage over you. They level up faster and thus have more chance to get good drops and more upgrades to either stats and skills.

Here in the Philippines, it is common for several players to share an account so that it IS online most of the time. If you can break down the online time to 24/7 then the “advantage” that you build against others increases tenfold. Some people resort to third party programs such as bots – now that’s ILLEGAL and for me, it’s cheating.

For some of the games, the common practice is “piloting”. It’s become popular these days that some groups and even Internet cafes have sprung up and offer it as a side business. The rules covering it are vague and, in my humble opinion, in the gray area.

I’d like to share with you some facts and my personal opinions on the matter.

MMORPG In-Game Events

Before I became head of marketing for Level Up, I was head of Community. My job then was designing and running in-game events for almost all of our games. It was loads of fun, something that I don’t get to do today since I’m busy handling 5 out of the 7 titles in our portfolio.

And even before that, I was designing events for our own Ragnarok guild, The Fellowship (at Chaos and Odin). This was way before – in 2003. Now, I am training the new crop of Community Managers to take on the challenge of making and implementing new and innovative events for our players.

In-game events, or what we call “IGE” at work, are always a hit among players. If planned and properly executed, the rewards are endless – happy players, happy community, happy bosses (the office kind, not the monster kind, kk?)

Take this old 2005 event called “The Royal Cure”. In this event, the king (Tristan III) of Ragnarok is sick and he needs helps from the citizenry. It’s a quest type event where the players gather stuff to save poor old me.

Blast From The Past (Emails and MMORPGs)

Let’s stroll back through memory lane.

Anyone of you recognize the image below? Yep, that’s the old 1997 log-in page for hotmail. And yes, I made my first e-mail account back then using hotmail.

In the days of prepaid cards, slow internet, and frames (yuck!), I registered for my first-ever e-mail account back in the summer of 1997 at our home in San Francisco, California. I was there to visit my mom and do some vacation time.

And guess what? That e-mail account still exists today.
