5 Online Game Design Notes For The Future

It used to be simpler 8 to 10 odd years or so ago, the online gaming market wasn’t as cramped, cutthroat and saturated like what it is today. In today’s unforgiving industry, a LOT of games get designed, put on the proverbial closed beta axe and (around 80% to 90%) will never get to see the light of day. This may be due to the fact that most games are just rehashes or old gimmicks or, sadly, clones of more popular AAA titles. There toooo much fantasy titles out there. The teams that tried to stay away from them are also having a hard time.

Only the innovative designs strike a big chance of seeing their titles go past the betas and earn money in the “commercial” stage. A like-the-rest-of-em game may be a modest hit but if another similar title comes up with better graphics, it’s difficult to start all over again and retain players.

Here’s my unsolicited advice for the design/developer talents out there… some ideas off the top of my head on how to make things work…

How MMOS Make Money

Often, we just play it. Sometimes, we pay for it. But do we really understand the business of Massively Multi-player Role Playing Games (or MMORPGS)?

The following feature article from MMOSITE.COM will show you the types of business models and how online games make money. Sadly, the market is so competitive these days that most online games even fail to make their Open Betas.

How to Throw a Guild EB Party

Last Saturday, I was with the Waukster at Milton Sy’s (leader of the Bozanian pRO guild) birthday party held at Dencio’s in Greenhills. Let me first greet the guy another “Happy Birthday!” and thanks for a swell and cool party.

It was so fun that Ragnarok players were in their jockeys. Why? I’m sure Waukeen already posted the pics. I’ll try to grab what I can and post it here too. Hehehe!

The snapshot below is from a party we threw for Bacolod RO players when I was there last year.

Anyways, this prompted or inspired me to create a How-to guide on organizing your own EB party for your guild. That, after one more click…

How To Avoid Being Hacked

When I talk to my friends and officemates in the Customer Care department, we do have a lot of hack complaints, calls and tickets.

When I ask about the number cause of hacks or account compromises, the most common cause is NEGLIGIENCE.

That’s right, kids. Sometimes, we take small things for granted, like typing slow or inputting our password in a public place (like a cafe) surrounded by unscrupulous individuals.

I already discussed some common tips to avoid being hacked back in my old blog. But here’s an update from the RF boards. The hackers and account thieves are being more advanced now, using mediums such as Yahoo, YM, and even friendster to get into your MMORPG account. This is true not just here in the Philippines but anywhere too.

The tips after the jump

Empowering Players

I was inspired by the comments on my latest post about the Top 5 Myths about GMs. Some really agree that there are a lot of players who feel that all employees are GMs. Also, I got support and feedback that indeed, GMs are understaffed and over-worked.

I agree. With a lot of tasks that a GM has to do, there has to be some sort of “assitance” needed.

That’s precisely the point why I (together with GM Garamond and the RF team) started the RF Vanguard program. And this is what empowerment is all about

The Top 5 Myths About Game Masters

More often than not, a lot of players have misconceptions on what a Game Master (GM) is. What do we do? What are our jobs? Are we like gods on Mount Olympus hurling thunderbolts and banning players on a whim?

The most common assumption is that GMs’ are all-powerful beings that have complete and utter control over the game and its denizens. How I wish it were true. Quite the opposite. In order to avoid corruption, bias and favoritism within the ranks, a GMs powers are limited. He or she is given powers and tools to do specific tasks according to the job description.

Another funny thing to note is that some younger players think that ALL employees of a gaming company (like ours) are GMs. If this were the case, there would be utter chaos in the office and no true work will be done.
