Dog Is A Victim of MMO Emo Relationship

Here’s something new we don’t see everyday. An obsessed online gamer gagged and bound his “virtual boyfriend’s” dog. Now, she’s currently in police custody and is charged with animal cruelty and attempted kidnapping. Accordin to this report by CNET, Kimberly Jernigan–a 33-year-old woman from North Carolina–”was apparently distraught after her online relationship with a 52-year-old man from Claymont, Del., came to an end.”

Accroding to the report, Jernigan was said to have “broken into the unnamed victim’s apartment with a Taser, a pair of handcuffs, a BB gun, her dog, and a roll of duct tape. He wasn’t there, so she waited. When the virtual ex arrived home he saw what looked like a laser beam projecting on his chest. He immediately fled the apartment and contacted the Newcastle County Police.”

Road to Live Photo Essay

Last Saturday, October 4, we did the Road to Live event at the SM Mall of Asia. The main event was the Grand Finals of RPC 2008 and once the dust settled, it was Bozanian Beast Fighters who came out the winner. Besting 7 others in the Final 8, Boza is now officially Team Philippines and will represent out country in RWC 2008 on Oct 18 and 19 at the LIVE 2008 event (World Trade Center).

Meanwhile, we had lots of fun at the event. Yours truly, together with GM Atma and the other Community Managers did the hosting and raffled off scores of in-game items, jackets, shirts and freebies.

Perfect World. Your World. Your Game.

The Perfect World Philippines marketing team led by Brand Manager Keith Morales, just started a new campaign hinged on a new “battlecry” for the game – Your World. Your Game.

The message is simple yet direct to the point. In Perfect World, it really IS your own world, you can develop and play your character in whatever style you want; PvE, PvP, casual or hardcore, there’s always something for you to do inside the game. To start off the campaign, we’re filming short interviews of PW ‘celebrities’ and players to post to youtube. As the debut to this youtube “commercial”, we present to you the lovely GM Meishen, who’s also the assistant brand manager for Perfect World.

Video: Addiction, Divorce and RMT in MMORPGs

MMORPGs: A Guy’s Barbie Doll?

I think I read it somewhere or overheard it a few days back…

They say that one close analogy to MMORPGs is a Barbie doll. Why? Come to think about it. 99% of us play online RPGs to “dress up” our characters. Isn’t that what collecting Barbies and clothes, accessories, etc. all about?

Is it a guy’s Barbie? Could be… I mean, we all started out as noobs, novices (call ‘em what you will) with mediocre chracters. After a few dozen quests, you finally find something nice for your character to wear, eh?

How to Throw a Guild EB Party

Last Saturday, I was with the Waukster at Milton Sy’s (leader of the Bozanian pRO guild) birthday party held at Dencio’s in Greenhills. Let me first greet the guy another “Happy Birthday!” and thanks for a swell and cool party.

It was so fun that Ragnarok players were in their jockeys. Why? I’m sure Waukeen already posted the pics. I’ll try to grab what I can and post it here too. Hehehe!

The snapshot below is from a party we threw for Bacolod RO players when I was there last year.

Anyways, this prompted or inspired me to create a How-to guide on organizing your own EB party for your guild. That, after one more click…

The Man Who Killed Lord British

This tale is now a classic… a legend even, in the field of MMORPGs. First, let me introduce Lord British. Lord British is the character of Ultima Online creator Richard Garriot (yeah, the guy who wants to go to the moon).

The date was August 8, 1997 during beta testing of the game. Lord British’s royal visit was conducted as a part of server population stress test. A player character known as Rainz cast a spell called “fire field” on Lord British that, surprisingly, killed him.

Look at the now famous screenshot below and mark the chat; “HE DIED”. You can see the corpse just behind the raised portcullis in the lower left.

It was reported that Rainz was ultimately (pardon the pun) banned. But not for his actions against Lord British but for some other complaints from players.

Excerpts from his interview after the break.

“Pilots” in MMORPGs

A compleat online/MMO gamer is uber-competitive. If you miss a day in leveling up, your competitors (the other players, factions or guilds) have an advantage over you. They level up faster and thus have more chance to get good drops and more upgrades to either stats and skills.

Here in the Philippines, it is common for several players to share an account so that it IS online most of the time. If you can break down the online time to 24/7 then the “advantage” that you build against others increases tenfold. Some people resort to third party programs such as bots – now that’s ILLEGAL and for me, it’s cheating.

For some of the games, the common practice is “piloting”. It’s become popular these days that some groups and even Internet cafes have sprung up and offer it as a side business. The rules covering it are vague and, in my humble opinion, in the gray area.

I’d like to share with you some facts and my personal opinions on the matter.
