The Girls of GStar 2007 Korea

Korea’s so dang cold nowadays but the girls here are sizzling hot!

Part of my business trip here is to attend the G-Star Expo, a gathering of game business VIPs from all across the world to share information, launch products and scout for new titles and opportunities.

Too bad the wireless Internet connection at the hotel wasn’t working since last night. I checked out of COEX Intercon and transferred here to Lotte hotel as per the instructions of the organizing committee. My apologies for not posting anything yesterday, but do not fret, I will make it up to you.

I spent a good portion of my day yesterday listening to developers pitch in their new products and games while I squeezed in a couple of meetings with our current developers in-between. I did this over coffee and snacks.

Am pretty sure you don’t want to hear more of my personal schedule and want me to get on with the girls, right?

Your wish is my command.

GStar Korea 2007 Photo Essay

Here’s a quick and dirty photo essay of my Day 1 activities at the GStar gaming summit. Okay, I have to admit – part of my trip here to Korea is to attend this HUGE gaming event and business expo. Someone’s gotta do it, right? *wink*

November 8, 2007 – slept only around 5 hours the night before. Some of our Korean friends took us out for dinner and some drinks. Woke up to the chilling cold weather and took the 1 hour bus-limousine service to Kintex, the venue for G-Star 2007. Kintex is very near Incheon, the airport. Level Up Philippines COO Pet Syling and myself tried to catch up on sleep at the bus but this loud-mouth American behind us wouldn’t stop talking. Sigh.

Got at Kintex around 10am and immediately went inside to register. Kintex is a HUGE expo and event area. It makes our World Trade Center look like a two-car garage in comparison. The place is high-tech. Free wi-fi everywhere. Scores of coffee and snack shops and a dozen conference and meeting places, sweet!

Musings: Korean Food

I love my camera! Well, actually, it’s a love-hate relationship. I love it because I get snapshots of everyday life and yes, I HATE it because the damn batteries don’t last that long. Anyways, this old friend of mine is nearly reaching the end of its useful life. It has allowed me to document my travels and of course, share them with you. Soon, this cam will be replaced. But that’s another story…

Now, I already admitted to you my weakness of experimenting on foreign food whenever I’m in another country, yes? Btw, this post has NOTHING to do with gaming so bear with me.

In  the past couple of days of my stay here in Seoul, I have come across new and exciting foodstuffs. One thing that you all have to remember is that Koreans like it hot. Their staple fair, the Kimchi, is found in almost anything except, I think, ice cream.

Here’s something that I feasted on over lunch at Kintex during G-Star. It’s called “Bulgogi over rice”.

Philippines Bags 3rd Place in RWC 2007

Sadly, we didn’t bring home the gold but Team Armada-Philippines, official RP team to the Ragnarok World Championships 2007 held at the Lotte Activity Center in Seoul, Korea, took the bronze medal after defeating Germany 2-0.

Team Philippines lost to the Korea National team 2-0 in the bid for one of two finals slots. Korea went on to battle Thailand (who defeated Germany) for the finals. Thailand went to upset the host country 3-1 in their best-of-five finals match to become the 2007 RWC Champions!.

This is the best finish yet for our country in the second installment of the international Ragnarok tournament. The RWC 2007 ends today and the Philippine contingent will fly back to Manila tomorrow, July 23, 2007.

Carlo Ople aka Waukster, reports how the inclusion of a SinX (Assassin Cross) for the Koreans turned the tide of battle for them. “Extremity Fists flew left and right but at the end of the day, the Assassin Cross of Korea made the difference as he was able to take out Team PH’s Priest with a series of quick Soul Destroyers powered by their Minstrel’s Bragi’s Poem.” writes Waukeen.

Team Philippines RWC Beats Brazil and Indonesia

Team Armada, the official Philippine Team to the 2007 Ragnarok World Championships just beat Indonesia 2-0 in their first assignment today and then went on to take down Brazil 2-1. In a twist of fate, Team Brazil, also sponsored by Level Up, meets up with our representatives in a match that would take the winner to the semi-finals (most likely with South Korea) tomorrow, July 21.

Wauks blogs about the details of the match: “The first match was quick, as Team PH’s Champion was singled out and taken down. Brazil took the early lead at 1-0. Team PH bounced back during the second round as the Champion was able to place a well-timed Extremity Fist to Brazil’s Professor, this move tied the series at 1-1. The last and deciding match was even more intense, as the two teams immediately engaged each other in a melee. However, Team PH was able to eliminate Brazil’s Professor once again”.

South Korea to Tax RMT

Last June 26, 2007, the South Korean government office called the Korean National Tax Service (which equivalent to the US IRS or the Philippine BIR) has announced that they are imposing a Value Added Tax (VAT) to RMT (Real Money Trading) in online games.

Often called “PHP Trading” here locally, the new rule is summarized as below:

“Sellers who do between 6 and 12 million won/half year in business (USD 13,000 or PHP 637,000) will have VAT auto applied by transaction’s middle-man. Sellers who do more than 12 million won/half year in business will need a business license and will pay the tax by themselves”
