Gunpla Builders World Cup 2011 Hong Kong

Apologies if I wasn’t able to update the blog recently. Was in Hong Kong this weekend and just came back a couple of days ago to attend to some official business. Anyways, while I was there, I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the 2011 Gunpla Builders World Cup exhibit at the 2011 Ani-Com expo event at the HK convention center.

Please enjoy some of the photos…

China Fakes Life-Sized Japan Gundam

A couple of years ago, the Japanese built this 1:1 scale classic, RX-78 Gundam atĀ Odaiba’s Shiokaze Park. This was done in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Mobile Suit Gundam.

Not to be outdone, China has erected a flimsy replica atĀ Floraland park in Chengdu.

Spot the difference?

Pending Model Kit Projects

After my great online shopping spree of sci-fi kits and figures, I still have a lot of pending model kit projects. My last fully completed model kit was the AT-ST with the simple base.

Almost all of my pending kits are around 80% to 90% done. Most of them just have to be finally assembled or mounted on their corresponding dioramas. There’s been a LOT of stuff going on at work… so I had to shelf them for a bit.

Now that LIVE 2010 is done, I think I finally have time to go back to the hobby.

In Progress: Original Mecha Kit Bash

Photobucket
Me and the weekend modeling warriors always wanted to do a Mech mod. The next best thing from a scratch-build is a kit bash… getting parts from toys, surplus kit parts and what-have-you to build something original. In this exercise, the imagination (and yes, budget too) is the only limit.

For this build, the base figure was a 1/60 Mechwarrior Destroid Tomahawk toy lovingly donated by Cho Caruncho from his office desk. We also went around the office and asked for old toys, scrap plastic, etc to come up with our spares bin. The guys also brought their model kit spares to the house to come up with a common resource from which to build this monstrous mech…

My Modeling Workshop

Photobucket

Just wanted to share with you my workbench and the tools I use for Gundam/Model Kit bashing. I also have some gear for Toy Photography.

Basically, the setup is the entire third floor of our house, which is an open terrace/attic. There, during weekends, the gang converges and we do all sorts of wacky stuff… most of which gets posted here and in my Facebook fan page.

Anyways, check out more nifty pics after the break…

Gundam Sinanju Made Out Of Paper

Photobucket

Would you believe that the MSN-06S Sinanju pictured above is made ENTIRELY OF CARDBOARD PAPER?!?

Yup, peeps. Awesome, awesome work by fellow gamer, mech enthusiast and friend Gian Carlo Wisco. Gian says that; “It’s made out of f160 gsm board paper and stands at 27 inches.”

I’ve been doing my share of Gunpla modeling for almost two years now and I’ve never seen great, detailed work. Kudos, Gian. Hats off to you!

For more photos and a sneak peak on how Gian did it after the break…
