MMORPG In-Game Events

Before I became head of marketing for Level Up, I was head of Community. My job then was designing and running in-game events for almost all of our games. It was loads of fun, something that I don’t get to do today since I’m busy handling 5 out of the 7 titles in our portfolio.

And even before that, I was designing events for our own Ragnarok guild, The Fellowship (at Chaos and Odin). This was way before – in 2003. Now, I am training the new crop of Community Managers to take on the challenge of making and implementing new and innovative events for our players.

In-game events, or what we call “IGE” at work, are always a hit among players. If planned and properly executed, the rewards are endless – happy players, happy community, happy bosses (the office kind, not the monster kind, kk?)

Take this old 2005 event called “The Royal Cure”. In this event, the king (Tristan III) of Ragnarok is sick and he needs helps from the citizenry. It’s a quest type event where the players gather stuff to save poor old me.

Ultimate Gamers’ Wedding

Here’s what happens when gamers/geeks tie the knot.

Lead level designer for Blizzard, Cory Stockton recently got married. The perfect theme? Why, a gamer inspired wedding, of course!

From an article at bit-tech.net, “The Stockton wedding was a geek party like no other then, incorporating a Super Mario wedding cake, tables named after game consoles (with the head table called ‘Press Start to Begin‘) and a Legend of Zelda ice sculpture/vodka luge centerpiece.”

Interviewees Wanted

Ahh…

Nothing like a nice lazy Saturday to start your weekend right. No work. No deadlines. No bosses.

Last night, we had a blast playing Tekken and some poker at the birthday of PittyDPat. Happy birthday, my friend! May you have 100 more!

At any rate, I just had this crazy idea of posting about gamer interviews. I’ve interviewed a lot of our GMs and Gamer Babes in the past. But it seems that I’m having difficulty sourcing out for more.

Interviews are always a welcome respite from all the stress and issues of the gaming world.

I’m opening the floodgates to anyone who wants to get interviewed. I’d prefer a Gamer Babe, of course. But I’m still open to any gamer willing to share his thoughts and his experiences for my readers.

Oh before I forget, here’s a shot of me with Gamer Babe Pam while working during a presscon.

The mechanics and rules are simple. It’s just one more click to find out, kids…

Brands Now Keen On Online Game Ads

As the battle for CCU, paying players, better graphics and better gameplay rages on. Traditional brands are now looking forward to longer and lasting relationships with game developers and publishers.

Recently, in Austin, Texas, game developers converged for the Austin Game Developers conference and have concluded that there is, indeed, a huge opportunity for games to be seen as an advertising platform.

CNet reports that certain people have woken up to it,” said Chris Sherman, executive director of Virtual Worlds Management, who ran the conference’s precursor, the Austin Game Conference. “The consumer goods industry and the toy industry (and the) media have woken up (to the idea) that people can be more engaged in a game-type environment.”

MMOGs Used For Money Laundering

It’s undeniable. There really is a huge secondary market (read: RMT or Real Money Trading or “PHP Trading”) in the online gaming industry. I have heard stories about huge amounts of money being spent for in-game items here and abroad.

We at Level Up always try our best to police these incidents but we simply cannot be there all the time. The games have policies which punish caught PHP offenders. In fact, we do not encourage  PHP trading/RMT due to the risks involved – the items could have been stolen, the sellers are out to get you or your account, etc. etc.

Meanwhile, due to this growing “underground market”, members of the underworld may be turning to online games to launder illegal acquired cash.

Details after the jump.

How To Avoid Being Hacked

When I talk to my friends and officemates in the Customer Care department, we do have a lot of hack complaints, calls and tickets.

When I ask about the number cause of hacks or account compromises, the most common cause is NEGLIGIENCE.

That’s right, kids. Sometimes, we take small things for granted, like typing slow or inputting our password in a public place (like a cafe) surrounded by unscrupulous individuals.

I already discussed some common tips to avoid being hacked back in my old blog. But here’s an update from the RF boards. The hackers and account thieves are being more advanced now, using mediums such as Yahoo, YM, and even friendster to get into your MMORPG account. This is true not just here in the Philippines but anywhere too.

Blast From The Past (Emails and MMORPGs)

Let’s stroll back through memory lane.

Anyone of you recognize the image below? Yep, that’s the old 1997 log-in page for hotmail. And yes, I made my first e-mail account back then using hotmail.

In the days of prepaid cards, slow internet, and frames (yuck!), I registered for my first-ever e-mail account back in the summer of 1997 at our home in San Francisco, California. I was there to visit my mom and do some vacation time.

And guess what? That e-mail account still exists today.

The Art of Begging (in MMORPGs)

By now, if you ever play online games, you’ve most likely encountered beggars who ask anything from in-game cash to loot or even items.

Sadly, these types of players are constant in an online game and MMORPGs.

But why do they do it? A lot of people argue that if these beggars just spend their time doing quests or farming, they’ll get more. But there may be a deep, underlying factor why they beg. Perhaps they make a lucrative “business” just standing in the city streets, approaching mid and high-level avatars and asking for money.

Let’s examine the probable reasons why - after the jump

Player Feedback

When you’re running an MMORPG, it’s VERY IMPORTANT for the publishers to get player feedback. Whenever, we get feedback we make sure that the developers know about this ASAP.

This is so we can flag serious issues, bugs or errors in the game. In games with item malls or are free-to-play, the most critical aspect of this would be pricing. Pricing of the items, especially those that are consumables and are often bought is crucial to the prolonged satisfaction of the customer.

Few players know this, but as publishers, we CANNOT do anything to the game. The developers, the ones who design the game, have the right and the power to do this. We defer to their wisdom when it comes to game balance and game integrity issues, but we also maintain a close relationship to remind that WE know pinoy gaming preferences and spending habits better.

Some developers see this and act accordingly, while some take their sweet time to do this. Hence the delays.

Timewaster: Acrobots

Bored?

You gotta try this flash-based, web browser game.

It’s called ACROBOTS

What do you do with it? Well, you play with the sucking acrobots. Add gravity and movement to that and you’ll have fun for a couple of minutes at best.

Trust me… you won’t regret it
