Timewaster: Sock and Awe

One of the funniest moments in President George Bush’s tenure was when an Iraqi journalist threw NOT ONE but TWO shoes at him.

Of course, the Internet is fast to act – not just with news, videos and blog reports of the incident but also with a flash game a couple of days after the incident. The site, sockandawe was so popular that it was sold for around $8,000 after just a week of the shoe-throwing fiasco. If you’re bored, see if you can score better than the Iraqi journalist. Game Industry Salaries

Being a member of the gaming industry, I always try to keep up with industry news. My latest find was a survey conducted in 2007 by Jill DuffyThe Game Industry Salary Review. Note that the figures above are NOT the Philippine standards (I could only wish. sigh).

They sent email invitations to Game Developer magazine subscribers, Game Developers Conference 2006 attendees, and Gamasutra.com members in January 2007, inviting them to participate in our annual salary survey. There were 5,600 respondents. Of course, the figures were in USD (US Dollars). I wondered how much the monthly compensation of gaming professionals were in PHP, hence the graph above. The standard in the US and other countries is “annual compensation”. We Pinoys measure it in “monthly”.

WTF?!? MS Excel is the Next 3D Graphics Game Engine?

Crysis may have set a new benchmark in terms of what the 3D capabilities of the modern-day computer are. Alone in the Dark is setting the pace for HD console gaming… but do you know that Microsoft Excel may be revolutionary when it comes 3D game engine platforms?

Hard to believe? Continue reading…

Peter Rakos of Gamasutra believes in the sound fundamentals of MS Excel as a graphics engine. Rakos wrote;  ”It is understood that Excel is an all-round office tool, but probably it is unknown that it has a bunch of features that makes Excel a high-class 3D graphics engine.”

He continues with some detailed explanations of the fundamentals and how-to’s of Excel’s capabilities. “Lol this is genius! :D Good work, although you may have too much time on your hands” was one of that posts’ comments.

Meanwhile, I’ll show you the final product through a video of Excel animating a 3D cube. Awesome stuff. After the break…

Assasin’s Creed is Best Action Adventure Game 2007

Assassin’s Creed, developed by French gamemaker UbiSoft came out as the Best Action Adventure game for 2007. This honor was bestowed by the prestigious game site, GameSpot.

But it faced off tough competition. Can you say God of War 2, Resident Evil 4, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass? Whew! But the people’s votes and the editors choice were the same. Assassin’s Creed came out on top.

The game takes place in 1191 AD. You play an elite Assassin sent to stop the hostilities by suppressing the powers on both the Crusader and Saracen sides. But as you carry out your missions, a conspiracy begins to unfold. You find yourself tangled up in a conflict that threatens not only the Holy Land, but the entire world.

[Video] Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Here’s another upcoming title to look for in 2008. George and his elven helpers are busy doing the finishing touches for their new game, Star Wars The Force Unleashed.

Set to be released in Q2 of 2008, The Force Unleashed has some amazing graphics and an equally kick-ass trailer (see below). The game will be available for Xbox 360, the Wii and the Playstation 3 (let me check if they’ll develop something for the PS 2 still).

As its name implies, The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time.

CSI:NY in Second Life

Here’s a first!

There will be a special episode of CSI:NY which features Second Life, one of the biggest MMORPGs today. This will be one of the first TV shows that directly incorporate an online game. And that game, Second Life, will also hold an in-game event to help promote the show and vice-versa. Talk about about genius marketing!

In this episode, Mac (Gary Sinise) will go inside the game “undercover” to track down the killer of a famous Second Life player. Check out the trailer video below.

Starcraft The Board Game

Every now and then, me and my old pals gather up to play board games. Back in college, it used to be pen-and-paper RPGs like D&D, Vampire, Star Wars, Rifts, etc. But the hassle and time-consuming process of creating characters and gathering everyone for a campaign just doesn’t cut it nowadays (everyone’s busy with this thing called “life”).

In the office, my boss and I would gather the troops to play classic games such as Cranium or Apples to Apples. Even our CEO would join in on the fun (she leads by 1 win ahead of me in Apples to Apples).

Meanwhile, I came across something related to both board games and video games – the new StarCraft Board Game.

If you think playing the video game is complex, check out this game.

Marvel Universe Online

There’s very little information about the up and coming title co-developed by Microsoft and Cryptic Studios.

There’s a short blurb about it at the Cryptic Studios website. The wikipedia entry also states that the game is being developed for both the XBox 360 and PC/Windows Vista (of course, it’s Microsoft). Release date is a “To Be Announced” 2008.

Perhaps Mr. Gates wants to have something to augment the huge windfall of Halo 3.

Here’s a teaser-trailer of the game (just characters, NO gameplay footage)

Can you name all the Marvel characters that you see?

Solo or Groups in MMORPGs

A lot of MMORPGs are designed with the “group” or “party” in mind. WoW was probably the one who made the 40-man raids and instances popular. Although the developers would like to tell us players that we are the heroes, a tough MVP or boss can take down even 20 of us if our levels do not even come close to challenging it.

Perhaps it’s a matter of game design or perhaps it’s all about culture or tradition in MMORPGs. Look at the Boss Hunts or “BH”. A lot of communities complain if a single character can BH. Boss hunts are supposed to be a group thing. When someone or something owned by that “someone” makes it possible for him or her to kill a boss single-handedly, the forums catch fire with cries of protests, “imbalance” and pleas of nerfing.

But sometimes not everyone likes to play MMORPGs in party mode. This is where the dilemma arises.

It can be tricky for both the publisher and the game designers to balance it vis-a-vis the potential community disaster that it can create.
