I’m currently heading early preparations for LIVE 2008. And yes, the Philippines’ BIGGEST and BEST online gaming event will be even bigger (and badder) this year.

Currently, the various head judges for the 5 tournaments for Ragnarok, Perfect World, RF Online, FlyFF and Freestyle are finalizing the new tournament rules and mechanics. We’re also busy laying out the foundations for the theme of this year’s Live. I can’t share it with you right now but I promise that you’ll hear it from me very soon.

MMORPG Industry: Lessons Learned from 2007

Almost every MMO company would like to fend off the 800 pound gorilla that is World of Warcraft. What’s astounding is that it’s a subscription based game in a renaissance world of free or item-based business models. It can’t be denied, WoW has gone from being big to being a part of pop culture. We’ve seen the brilliance of their TV commercials and how they seamlessly even integrated a Toyota truck into an advergaming coup. Genius!

Michael Zenke of Gamasutra said that 2007 was “not a great year for the industry, but it still wasn’t bad.”

What follows are my “Lessons Learned” notes for the MMORPG industry in general in 2007.

  • It’s not all about graphics – Maple Story, not your average AAA title, has managed to amass 3 million subscribers. It has nothing to do with the graphics. It’s gameplay and fun factor are what contributed to its success. In Vietnam, a “low spec” game called Swordsman Online has hundreds of thousands of concurrent users, surpassing even Ragnarok in that country.
  • Free is still the best price – of course, World of Warcraft is an exemption. It’s known that North American players are used to paying monthly subscriptions and that the Asian market plays for free. Call it a cultural or socio-economic divide, North American MMO companies are slowly seeing the wisdom of acquiring games using the F2p model. So did we, when we opened up Ragnarok here in the Philippines as an F2P service.

2007 was a good year for movies. It also was a good year at the Box Office. Spiderman 3, the number one movie for 2007 also entered the all-time box office records at number 11 with an impressive 885M (worldwide gross). Titanic is still the number one film. That movie grossed an amazing 1.85 BILLION dollars

Now, allow me to recap the Top 10 movies of last year (in terms of box office revenues). Spiderman 3, Shrek the Third and Transformers make up the top tier of that list.

Complete list after the break.

Video Game Holiday Gift Guide 2007

If you’re looking for a gift this holiday for a fellow-geek, the best gift is a video game. Of course, if you want to save the industry, do go for the originals and avoid pirated stuff.

I’ve compiled some suggestions for your shopping this Christmas Season. If you go to the malls, there are some shops that offer huge discounts for games – especially those that are old. The challenge is for you to find them. If you want to do online shopping, ebay.ph and auction.ph are your best bets.

Thanks to gamespot, here’s the 2007 Holiday Gift Guide to help all of you. There’s also a video for you lazy geeks at the gamespot microsite.

USA Dominates WCG 2007 Finals

The United States of America overpowers some tough competition as they come out on top of the medal tally for the 2007 Grand Finals of the World Cyber Games or WCG.

The WCG 2007 Grand Finals was held at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington from October 3 to 7.

With over 700 players from over 74 countries competing for the “Olympics of Video Games”, the Americans held on to home-court advantage as they captured gold medals over strong competition, most notably the from WCG powerhouse Korea. Team USA got 3 Golds, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze while Brazil and Korea came close with identical medal tallies of 2-0-1.

Highlighting play for the Americans on Saturday was Jeremy “Black Mamba” Florence who captured gold in Dead or Alive 4. Florence rolled through the competition and dominated the gold medal match against Sweden, 2-0. Philippines Bags 3rd Place in RWC 2007

Sadly, we didn’t bring home the gold but Team Armada-Philippines, official RP team to the Ragnarok World Championships 2007 held at the Lotte Activity Center in Seoul, Korea, took the bronze medal after defeating Germany 2-0.

Team Philippines lost to the Korea National team 2-0 in the bid for one of two finals slots. Korea went on to battle Thailand (who defeated Germany) for the finals. Thailand went to upset the host country 3-1 in their best-of-five finals match to become the 2007 RWC Champions!.

This is the best finish yet for our country in the second installment of the international Ragnarok tournament. The RWC 2007 ends today and the Philippine contingent will fly back to Manila tomorrow, July 23, 2007.

Carlo Ople aka Waukster, reports how the inclusion of a SinX (Assassin Cross) for the Koreans turned the tide of battle for them. “Extremity Fists flew left and right but at the end of the day, the Assassin Cross of Korea made the difference as he was able to take out Team PH’s Priest with a series of quick Soul Destroyers powered by their Minstrel’s Bragi’s Poem.” writes Waukeen.
