Star Wars Star Destroyer

A couple of weeks ago, I snatched a rare ERTL Star Destroyer model kit at Greenhills. At a little above P2,000.00, it’s a steal.

This is going to be a long project… probably taking a couple of months to finish, mainly due to the sparse detail of the kit. I also plan to do my first lighting project for a model kit. This will be done with LEDs, fiber optic cables, normal bulbs a lots and lots of wires, switches and mini EC boards.

Meanwhile, check out the other photos of the unboxing of my Star Destroyer… coming up…

More Photos and Commentary

First, let’s take a look inside the box…

There’s not much parts. The box only has around 5 sprues and the 2 major parts (the hull) are separated. However, as what I told you from the start, there’s not much detail. I will have to “accurize” or add detail parts to major parts of the model. I will be using this as a reference… it’s a 48″ scratchbuild (from nothing) Star Destroyer project. Awesome work! I can only wish to do justice to mine.

Here are some more photos up close…

I’ll be using styrene (special plastic for model kits) to add details. A good substitute to styrene would be old credit cards or top up cards. Excited, on my first night with the box, I started to cut old sim card plastic cards and then put in in the front of the deck. Here’s what it looked like without it…

And here are the first few additional plastic details or “accurizing” it…

Don’t worry about the color or even some of the “lettering”. This will all disappear after a few layers of primer and paint.

Let’s go see the other parts…

Let’s look at the rear section of the spacecraft…

compare this something made from scratch below…

Isn’t this so much better? I’ll be doing my best to come up to something close to that.

The first part of this project would be cutting up thousands of plastic parts and gluing it to the kit, I’m also thinking of using paper clips, brass wire and other various spare plastic parts leftover from my other model kits to accurize this baby. After that, I’ll most likely be adding panel lines to the hull and then glue the main components together. Two coats of primer will follow that followed by the actual painting. Then the real work will begin – the actual lighting of hundreds of fiber-optic cables throughout the model.

I’m really excited. Its a lot of painstaking hours… I’m still making a new Gundam right now and I’ll be updating you guys on the progress of that and the Star Destroyer every now and then.

Wish me luck!

Don’t go yet! Check out my other posts on my model kits

Peace!

    sir,

if you’re using top up cards and the like instead of styrene, do yourself a favour and sand away the lettering. the gloss coating will make it harder to prime.
