South Korean Government to Invest Millions in Video Games

I regularly visit Korea every year for business and I can vouch that the gaming industry there is alive and kicking. Good thing their goverment is truly supportive of this. In a report by the Digital Chosunilbo, the South Korean government is planning to invest more than $200 Million dollars to support their own video game industry.

The South Korean government announced that they will invest 350 billion Won ($237 Million USD) in the “computer game industry’ until 2012. Additionally, the country will be expanding exports to W5 trillion ($3.39 billion) a year.

Culture, Sports and Tourism Minster Yu In-chon in a meeting on Wednesday discussing mid- and long-term plans to develop the game industry said the emerging industry had proved to be a future growth engine by accomplishing its billion-dollar export goal for the year 2010 two years early.

Yu promised to draw up 60 projects including a US$200 billion game fund and help the country become one of three countries with the world’s largest game industry together with the U.S. and Japan.

This is good news for us, especially since majority of our online gaming developers are Korean.

I just hope that Philippine politicians read this and support our own local video game industry. If you know any Senator or Congressman, do me a favor and pass the word around. Thanks.
