Whoa there, old one! The PS2 bested its younger brother, the PS3 in sales last month. According to a report from Yahoo Games Plugged In, the PS3 found itself beaten out of fifth place by the PS2.
“A 50% leap in Playstation 2 sales accounts for the surprising change, an increase likely prompted by the system’s price cut on April 1, a move which apparently electrified interest in the nine-year old platform.” the report stated.
Meanwhile, Nintendo still claims the top 3 stops in hardware sales with the Nintendo DS in first, the Wii in second and the new DSi in third.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 clings on to 4th place.
This recent development has sparked rumors of a price cut for the PS3. There may be an announcement in E3 this June on a $100 off the already $400 SRP of the PS3. The Sony console is the most expensive gaming rig among those in the console wars.
