Not me of course.
This is about an editorial written by Michelle Clay of Turbine Games. She posts her story at womengamers.com
She writes about an interesting account of life inside an industry dominated by males. There, Michelle narrates about how the guys often treat her as somewhat of an oddity. But she has learned to adapt and survive in both the office and the industry.
Here’s an excerpt:
This is a young industry filled with young employees; and to top it off, it’s an industry that is all about play. So a large percentage of the employees are boisterous and unused to suit-and-tie formality. The result is a tee-shirt-and-jeans dress code, toys in the cubicles, nerf battles, after-work game sprees, over-the-top Halloween decorations, witty banter, trash-talk, and sometimes, topics of conversation that might get you a stern warning if you worked in an uptight environment. Sometimes it feels a bit like the Wild West. But, to balance that, from what I have seen, the folks in this industry know how to toggle in an instant from fun to serious. The work has got to get done, and it can’t be left in a shoddy state on account that the team was having a rubber-band battle.

the gaming industry is good if you’re single. i’ve heard that it’s notorious for long days and sleepless nights. i wanted to work for one and realize that there are times that people there work 60-80 hour weeks. i don’t think being a girl is the challenge, the industry itself is the challenge. it’s funny, in the US, there are only a few women programmers, but during my college life in UP, there are more girls than boys, maybe because the boys don’t go to classes and flunk the course.
Yeah. It’s fun. No dress codes. But here in our office, the ratio is almost equal. In my team, 90% of my Community Managers are girls. Mental note to self: do interviews and videos asap. Thanks, Issai!

Not yet. Maybe you should remind them… if it’s not asking too much. Thanks
Sometimes people get shocked when they find out I’m a programmer. lol

[...] I was working back then for Fast Forward magazine and PC World. Ever since, we’ve become good friends and bump on occasion on conferences, expos and shows. Luna is a very intelligent and and extremely ‘well read’ woman. She’s sweet, charming and witty. Her devotion to her work and to the industry is meticulous. I guess that’s why she’s perfect for her chosen field. But sometimes, as I wrote before, being a girl in a testosterone-laden industry is tough. [...]
