Movies: Die Hard 4.0 Review

You can’t put down a real action hero like John McClane.

And in Die Hard 4.0, Bruce Willis definitely shows us that even if he’s 51, there’s still much that he can do to bring justice to the legacy which is Die Hard.

I saw the movie with a couple of officemates last week and I was literally blown away. After having a blast in Transformers, June and July may just prove to be the best movie-months this year.

Before we go the the full review, check out the full trailer of Die Hard 4.0

WARNING: There ARE spoilers

Jump time!

John McClane is just a magnet for terrorists! If there be guys who have an idea on how to dominate the world and bring us to our knees – a lowly cop will show up in the right place and the right time to foil the “perfect plan”.

And the plan is nearly perfect. Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) and his posse craft a plot to attack the United States through hacking into the system thereby halting services such as financial, transportation, telecommunications and even power networkds. Gabriel was a computer genius hired by the DoD (department of defense) to check out their security, when Gabriel tells the government how crappy their system is, they fire him and “crucify” him. But not before designing a huge mainframe as a backup contingency to hold all of America’s important “information” – this be WEALTH (trillions of it!).

When Gabriel’s group start assassinating all of the country’s best hackers, they mess up the plan to kill Matt Farell (Justin Long) just BECAUSE John McClane is at Matt’s apartment at that time. When their routes intertwine and the terrorists decide to kidnap John’s daughter, they just dug up their own graves coz McClaine’s now out to get ‘em all!

From there on, it’s a roller coaster ride of action scenes, dialogue (and plot “explanations) and the action never stops. From fierce gunbattles to hot kung fu chicks (Maggie Q) togravity defying free-runners to even a fighter jet! The action scenes attempt to outdo (and perhaps outbudget) the previous ones in scope, carnage and “wow” factor.

Director Len Wiseman (of Underworld) has pulled out all the stops and has combined the magic of digital effects with great stunts, huge explosions and good cinematography to bring back John McClane and the basic expectations of the public on Die Hard to the big screen.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Die Hard without the witty dialogue, humor (thanks in part to Kevin Smith for the nerdy cliches) and Bruce Willis getting injured in every way imaginable. Although indieLONDON says that the movie is similar to True Lies, I think that Die Hard 4.0 was a well done job and provided what I expected, good pacing, explosive action – true John McClane style.

Of course, you’ll be seeing some inconsistencies in the flick – NO ONE USES A MOUSE in any PC! And how come America’s top computer installation ONLY has 3 friggin’ guards?!?

I give it a 4 out 5 stars!

But is it better than the previous Die Hard movies? Sound off below…

Cheers,

GM T
