Movie Review: Transformers

July 2, 2007 · Filed Under Movies, RF Online

WARNING: If you haven’t seen the movie… READ NO FURTHER! (SPOILER)

I just watched the movie last night with my wife at Greenhills Promenade and all I can say is that it was great! I was blown away by the special effects and the mega-destruction fight scenes between machines vs. man vs. machines.

It’s a good thing that we Asians have an advance screening vs. those from the Americas. If you look at the official transformers site it now says “7.2.7″ from a “7.4.7″ date. Perhaps they can’t take any much more that we are getting to see it before they do.

Complete review after we “roll out”…

Production, special effects and attention to detail was fantastic. Director Michael Bay did justice to the machines and the movie was very nostalgic to see the Autobots and the Decepticons in all their glory. Especially for a kid such as me who grew up in the 80s. Too bad there was more attention to details than to the characters and the story. For me, the “integration” of the Qatar soldiers, the dork advisors and Sam(and hotie Megan Fox) into the end scenes was akin to a terrible plot mesh in some saturday tabletop RPG game.

Oh well… the story is not the saving grace of the film, if I may say so myself. It passes of as decent - an excuse to get the characters and the machines into one helluva good execution and pacing. Although there were attempts to flesh out the characters, it looked more of a “comedy filler” than a realistic one.

But the battles were simply awesome and breathtaking. The CG really captured how “heavy” these machines were and the destructive power they packed once they wreaked havoc in the city streets. Although there were matrix-like effects… for me, it really didn’t feel special unless a human were doing it. How can someone relate to doors, sideskirts and rear-view mirrors doing acrobatic stunts?

Nevertheless, the film stays true to the “transformers” culture that we we knew and loved. Bay even made sure that the motivations for the main characters like Prime and Megatron never changed (although I wanted Starscream to whine a little bit more but Prime did say “Roll Out” - which made me a happy dude!). Also, quick question: If Megatron crash-landed in the Arctic circle in the 19th century, what plane model did he copy??? Surely there wasn’t anything that remotely looked like his form when he zoomed out from the Hoover dam… sigh, just one of the loopholes in the film, perhaps.

If you still haven’t seen it - GO OUT AND WATCH NOW!!! Btw, on some moviehouses you might catch a little surprise - a new trailer we edited to promote RF Online. Also, we’re having RF booths in selected cinemas.

Hmmm isn’t Novus just north of Cybertron?

Anways, I hope there’s a sequel.

PS. Megan Fox is HOT!!! Rawrrrrr. Maybe a feature about her here soon, eh?

Transformers 2? Woohoo! Dinobots? Constructiticons? Maximals and Predacons? Baka naman Gobots?

I agree with you sir. The movie was great! I always thought that Michael Bay’s destructions scenes were quite long and over the top (like in Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys 2, The Rock, The Lionel Richie Collection… WTF?!) but not this one. I enjoyed every second of it! I’m glad to know that he will also be directing the film adaptation of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. We’ll be expecting a lot of Matrix style scenes there I bet.

Me, I liked John Tuturro portraying another ’sneaky’ character - Agent Simmons. Nakakatawa talaga pagmumukha nya!

Sana magkaroon din ng “lubricating the enemy” skill mga Accre sa RF!

I really like the way they revised the metallic sound they make whenever they transform(but the older one is still the best).

    And I like Megatron’s teeth too :)

Your RF trailer was probably better than this movie.

I thought the effects were great and stuff. But, I got some bad reactions from my friends. Because they were “Transformers” fans back then. They were very much disappointed with the movie. I mean, they liked the effects and all. But I guess they didn’t like the story line. =(

what about the mechanical scorpion?? where did he copy the mechanical scorpion?

  11. GM T on July 7th, 2007 6:29 pm

In the desert, of course. It’s not clear that these aliens can ONLY copy mechanical forms. Hey, there are dinobots, right? Perhaps they landed during the Jurassic era and copied them…
