Investigating the “Double EC” exploit in Baldur

This past couple of weeks, a VERY controversial issue in Baldur cropped up.

Apparently, AnL guild of Baldur had a guild bug. Due to this, the can use the guildmaster skill, Emergency Call TWICE because they have 2 guildmasters. Now, this is really UNFAIR for all of those in the RPC 2007 Agit Lords siege scoring since this guild with the so-called bug can technically be in several places at an instant. Sort of a “ping-pong” effect if you asked me.

A lot of flamed, red-hot threads had appeared on the boards and in the unofficial chaos forums too. I have been receiving a lot of text messages, phone calls and even flooded comments here at my site.

I decided to help the RO RPC 2007 judges to investigate this matter. They will be posting an official statement at the website and at the forums any minute now. I don’t want to pre-empt it and place it here since I want the official channels to be the one to announce it first.

I will, however, tell you a few stories and a sorta inside-look into the investigation of the case.

Evidence is always important in an investigation. If ever you watch CSI, Gil Grissom tells us that the “evidence cannot lie”. The same is true in this case. Apparently, I wanted to hear both sides of the story first. Gather all the evidence and then me and the team should look at all the details and then decide if they are guilty or not.

Of course, before any case, a formal complaint must be made. The forums do not serve as a formal complaint but we DID get a couple of e-mails formally protesting and complaining about this. I won’t name-drop but they did substantiate their letter with “evidence” in the form of screenshots.

This prompted the GM team to investigate the matter. Lo and behold, once we tested their accounts, they really CAN do the darn cheat… madaya nga.

Now, to be fair, it’s good to hear the side of AnL too. We had a dialogue yesterday with their formal representative. The discussions were good and we heard all their stories and their side. About how they filed a ticket and “informed us about the bug”. Well, once we opened the ticket (the evidence cannot lie), they only asked us to fix certain functions (name change) but NEVER mentioned anything about a double EC bug. This to me and for the pRO team is clearly witholding information.

The RPC head judge then asked them to file a formal letter on why we should not sanction them. Based on this letter, the merits of the case and of course, the EVIDENCE, the RPC 2007 committee came up with a FINAL DECISION regarding the case.

    1. ANNOUNCED A FEW DAYS TO GO BEFORE THE VOTING ENDS? Dapat Wednesday tapos na ang botohan fo WC. Pero Tuesday afternoon lang nila in-announce na extended until Friday, yesterday lang sila nagbago ng rules.

    2. WHEN A TEAM WAS ALREADY LEADING WITH AT LEAST 4K POINTS AGAINST OTHER TEAMS WHEN THE ANNOUNCEMENT WAS DONE.

    Ganito yan e. Parang feeling tuloy ng karamihan ng mga non-Baldurian RPC teams ay lumaban sila sa isang basketball playoffs organized by LUG. Pero nang magsimula ang laban, ginawa ng organizers na last two minutes na lang sa 4th quarter, tapos ang score ng non-Baldurian team is 0 while the BOZA team is set to 100 points. LOLZ

    lahat ng guilds ng GMs na name-change ay merong bug na ganun. Its all a matter of singling out who’s abusing it or not.

    yung Fenrir Alliance tlga.. meron ako kilala from DOGs Alliance ng Odin na meron screenshot same dun sa ANL Baldur.. hindi nga lang DCA yung screenshot.. pero part xla ng Fenrir Alliance.. guildname is Restricted.. gotcha name ng GM.. tsktsk.. wildcards rep xia ng Fenrir Alliance.. DCA agitlords rep nila..

    i think the EVIDENCE LUG mentioned is the screenshot of mimiz guild.

    they dont have the screenshot of jamscogan ang 2fast guild doing the EC bug. do they have to report the bug? since they were not using it. and theres no evidence.

    since were talking here of evidence.

    do you have an EVIDENCE that jamscogan used the EC bug?

    ang alam namin, ang meron lang kayo evidence is yungkay mimiz.

    so, dont blame to all ANL what a single player’s wrongdoing.

    i must agree na partly kasalanan ng LUG and gravity yan, since hindi nila naayos ng husto yung pagmemerge. andami at ang hahabang maintenance ang nagyare pero hindi sya naayos.

    pero about sa decision, yung nagsasabi na hindi dapat sila naban, anong tingin nyo sa dupe bug? dapat ba lahat isisi sa LUG at gravity? dapat ba hindi rin maban yung mga nag abuse?

    kasi di ba, bug nga e, bakit mo iaabuse? bakit hindi mo na lang i-file ng ticket? aantayin mo pang may makapansin na iba bago mo sabihing “matagal na yan, walang ginagawa yung LU dyan. yada yada..”?

    the right thing to do is to file a ticket about the bug, and the other (of course, ang mali) is to abuse it. yun ay kung concerned talaga tayo sa pRO community, hindi lang sa “gains” natin as a player.

    buti nga di na disqualify e, at least yung unting hirap nung ibang members e meron pang pag-asa.

    mustlovecats check their announcement. nothing is said about name change, nothing is sid about EC. they didn’t even said to file separate tickets. the bug is almost one and the same and related. it is assumed they knew about it hence their announcement guild bug resolution.

    Nag comply naman ang AnL Baldur dyan ah. Kun may mali dyan ang LU, indi yun GM na nag file. Taena naka badtrip, halatang lutong macao na naman to ah.

    May pa “witholding information” pang nalalaman.

    Bakit na activate ang GTB at kelan na activated yon, sabi pa “once you, know we’ll know” amp “kung may mali, may managot” nag maintenance kayo para e disabled ang GTB, ibig sabihin may nagkamali, san at sino ngaun ang managot?

    dun sa nagmumura, hijo, lahat na online games my Bug and sometimes u cant predict it until it happens.. be Open Minded.. Kaya nga may rules and regulations eh, kung may bug man na mangyari, wag abuso… kung pwedi isumbong ng mabuti..

    yep sinabi ko yun.. yung PUNISHMENT kc hindi TAMA.. pwede naman bawasan nalang yung points w/o sanctioning them..

    pinapainvestigate ko lang yung sa DCA and Restricted.. pero hindi ko naman gs2 na maBAN xla.. Sinabi ko yun nung hindi ko pa alam yung punishment na ginawa sa ANL BALDUR! thats why hindi ko na inuulit na possible na DOUBLE EC Abusers sila.. although may screenshot ako nakita sa restriction guild.. ewan ko kung ipopost nya yun sa Rboards.. and hindi ko sinabi na lahat ng tga FENRIR DOUBLE EC ABUSER..

    I don’t know the content of the Gravity or LUG licensing agreements anymore, but in most other MMORPGs, the rule is this: if a player or group of players exploits a bug in the game, then the company has the right to BAN said player/players for as long as they want (ex. permanently).

    If Gravity or LUG has that in the EULA, then there’s no argument.

    If that clause isn’t in the EULA then there is a lesson to be learned here.

    I believe that a clause about bug abuse is in the LU EULA. It has been there since I started playing at the start of the commercial service of RO.

    The rules are there even before you register an account with LUG. And I believe it is also there before you install the game. Remember that you have to click on a tiny box saying that you agree with the aformentioned rules before you can continue installing the game and/or registering an account. Seems like you didn’t even bother to read it. So stop being so immature.

    Oh and one more thing, I quitted RO long ago.
