Last post, I showed you how to do the initial mold of the base via an old photo frame and some Plaster of Paris. This week, once the entire thing has dried, it’s time to add the details and then finally paint it.
Let’s go…
How to Make A Base For Your Scale Models (Part 2) by GM Tristan (http://gmtristan.com)
Here are the items you’re going to need for this phase of the project:
- Tamiya Acrylic Paints
- Airbrush with compressor (you can hand-paint it if you don’t have an AB)
- Old Rags
- Masking Tape
- Elmer’s Glue (White school glue)
- Sand
- Brush
- Rags
- Flat clear coat spray
The next step is to get your white glue and brush them all over the surface of the base. Sprinkle some sand, make sure you completely cover it and allow it to dry for a couple of hours (again, it’s best overnight if you have the patience). Jerk off the excess sand and you have a nice, textured base. You can then retouch areas using brush, glue and sand.
Here’s what it looks like once it’s dry (the sand, I got from a friend’s beach wedding)

Now it’s time to paint it. We’re going for a basic grassy, ground turf so we’ll want some gradients of 3 different colors, brown, yellow and green. I covered the edges in masking tape before starting.
First up is Tamiya’s Acrylic Nato Brown….

Once that dries for 30 minutes, it’s time to apply the Yellow

Again, 30 minutes to dry then it’s time for Park Green

Almost done! Let’s just do some retouches to the areas on the side which weren’t reached by the spray gun. Just hand-paint some Nato Brown onto it….

Tada! All done. To seal and protect everything, give it a couple of layers of flat clear coat.
Here are some shots of the base plus the AT-ST. Enjoy…

That concludes this tutorial. Be sure to check out PART 1 if you missed it. And then head on over to my Facebook Fanpage coz I’ll be posting the finished photoshoot pics of the AT-ST along with the base real soon!
I hope you guys learned a thing or two. This will make for an interesting weekend project. Don’t forget to comment here and show me your work(s), ok?
Thanks all!
