It always happens to me since my old Olympus digital compact is really a battery-drainer… imagine this scenario, I’m either about to take a sexy cosplayer or asking someone to take my photo with a celebrity and then bam! The battery runs out on me and makes a fool. Arggg!
Oh well, here are some tips which you can use to maximize and lengthen your digicam’s battery use.
First, let’s discuss the two most common types of batteries used by digital cameras today. First is a lithium-ion battery. This is usually pre-fabricated to the brand and requires recharging via AC outlet or USB. If possible, try to get a spare battery unit if your camera has this type. The second type of battery is the typical AA or AAA alkaline batteries. Most cameras use 2 pieces. I would advise you to get rechargeable batteries to save on costs. Just make sure to read up on your camera’s documentation to check up on which type of rechargeable battery is best for your unit.

My tips after the jump
TIPS ON HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA’S BATTERY LIFE
- Avoid using flash whenever possible – using natural light (sunlight) can make for better photos and make your batteries last longer.
- Use the viewfinder instead of the LCD - if you can do this, this will save on batteries. Just make sure that your viewfinder frames your photos the same way as your LCD. Frequent LCD usage is a drain on batteries.
- Reviewing – don’t be tempted to ALWAYS review your shots. That’s why you get a few seconds to see the shot right after you take it. Reviewing, especially videos, on your LCD will take away around 5 to 10 shots (or more) from your camera’s “shot-life”. This means that buying bigger memory (1GB) will be cost-effective in the long run.
- Spare Batteries – like what I said above, investing in a good charger and at least 2 sets of battery change can be a boon. I try to full-charge both sets before a major event and keep the other set in my bag. Sometimes, I still buy 2 Energizers just in case. Bring your charger for travel or overnight use.
- Zoom – use the camera’s zoom function sparingly. The motor used for zooming consumes a lot of power.
- Settings – if possible, set your camera’s sleep mode or battery saving functions to their best settings. Check your manual on how to do this.
- Climate – cold weather drains battery faster. Always keep your camera warm (by putting it near your body, in pockets, whenever possible). I suggest you put your spare batteries inside your pockets to keep them warm too.
- Batteries – If you plan not to use your camera for more than a few days, take away the batteries from the unit. This will avoid leakage, corrosion and prolong the batteries’ life.
I hope these tips help!
Happy digital photography!
