Gundam Tieren Diorama Part 3 (Final Stages)

I suggest you check out Part 1 and Part 2 of this project before you go further. I already pre-built the Tieren for this project.

Anyways, just a short recap from the previous post. I was finished with doing the battle-damage for the fallen Gundam and so far, I’m quite satisfied with the “aging” and the results. I also finished the base of the diorama using a wood base, Styrofor and Plaster of Paris. After initial layers of cheapo acyrlic via hand-brush, it’s now time to glue and set the “turf” (grass and the terrain) and then paint it for the final effect.

Let’s start…

GUNDAM TIEREN DIORAMA PROJECT PART 3

I start out by gathering the materials:

  • Elmer’s glue
  • Water
  • Pan for the glue
  • Medium-sized brush
  • Turf (which I bought at Jolie’s in Espana)
  • Salt Shaker
  • Beach Sand
  • Pebbles and Rocks (also from Jolie’s)

Here’s what we have then…

With a medium brush, I applied the glue (straight from the bottle) to the parts that I want to cover with turf. I do this with around a 4-5 inch area at a time. After, I shake the turf into it. Don’t be shy. Just put it in excessively. It’s alright.

Once that’s done, I spray it with a glue-water mixture (3 parts glue, 1 part water). This is to “bind” the top and the turf together. It’s a bit messy. Don’t worry about that, the white glue dries clear.

Dry this overnight…

Below, I do some final retouching on the areas around the head the fallen torso using cheap acrylics and hand brush ‘em in.

After 2 days, the turf is all dry. I then proceeded to do the terrain.

Start again with glue out of the bottle and dab it into the terrain. For this, I applied the glue all over in one stage. Once that’s done, liberally apply the beach sand. I also sprayed the “binding” mixture on top. I let this dry again for 2 days, with around a couple of hours of the first day under the sun.

Once fully dried, I shook off the excess sand and covered the fallen gundam with masking tape. I’m now going to paint it using the airbrush.

I first applied a flat coat of Nato Brown mix with Red and Brown. Once that dried, I dabbled in some neutral gray and some black in random spots focusing on the center areas where the Tieren would be standing.

Here are the results…

I then sprayed Dessert Sand around the edges to simulate the mud and the dust. I kinda liked the effect!

I also dry-brushed in some sky and neutral gray to make “rock formations” on the sides of the diorama…

Next stage of the project is doing the rock fall.

I start out by applying rocks via glue on parts where I envisioned the rocks to fall into the fallen Gundam. This was applied with the same techniques above….

So far… so good.

While waiting for that thing to dry (always have something to do while waiting for things like paint and glue to dry, ok?), I decided to fix the 1:100 trees. Since I didn’t like the wire frames (which were pretty much obvious), I applied some putty to it by hand. Dry that overnight and then hand-brush paint in some brown for the wood. There! The trees look better and more realistic!

There, look below. Nice little trees! Weeeeeeeeee!

In the meantime, I also prop up the 3 scaled model figures that came with the kit. After priming them, I cast them on old paint bottles using blu-tak. Now they’re ready to be hand-painted. Tough job to come! One of them’s the pilot. He’s gonna be riding the big Tieren. Woot!

Below: Here I am looking over the diorama and noting other adjustments that need to be made. I plop the Tieren just to make sure that everything’s to scale. It’s been around 3 weeks into the project now. Tip: Take your time. It’s worth it.

I guess there are just a few minor changes to be made. I wasn’t too happy with putting a different colored turf on the corner. And yes, I sprayed that with Green using the airbrush.

Am also so excited with the prospect of having to do a “studio shoot” with the final diorama later. Of course, Photography and Model Kit Making hobbies go well together, indeed.

Meanwhile, If you can’t wait to see the final images, I already uploaded them in my Facebook Album. I’ll be posting them here soon too.

Thanks!
