Console vs Online Gaming (by Kelvin Uy)

This guest post is by Kelvin Uy. Kelvin immediately wrote me when he heard that I was opening up guest posting in this blog. In fact, he’s scheduled to conduct his OJT (on-the-job-training) at Level Up this week and we’re both equally excited to meet and get to know each other.

On with his article…

I remember the first time I played console games with the Nintendo system. Those were Street Fighter and the famous Super Mario Bros. It me took countless hours of playing - until I finished the game and then play them all over again. Meanwhile, new Playstation and PS2 games have been published to grab a significant portion of the market share.

With the evolution of technology, game developers have crossed through another medium called the Internet and massively multiplayer PC games have been produced. Thus was born the MMORPG.

Which is better? You decide.

CONSOLE GAMES

A big advantage of console gaming over online games is that you don’t have to update the hardware to play. Console games are also compact, you can bring it whenever you want to. Another advantage of console games is you can feel at ease playing. Just sit back and relax while playing with your friends.

Now let’s look at the darker side, a somewhat negative aspect of consoles would be new developments and upgrades in software and hardware. This means you will have to buy their new product just to play. An example is Sony’s PS2 to PS3. Another setback: some game titles are offered in other consoles but not on the rival ones. An example would be Metal Gear Solid series and Tekken which are published in the Playstation but aren’t offered in the rival Xbox systems. This means you have buy their consoles just to play the game. Note that gaming isn’t cheap.

ONLINE GAMES

With online games, there is a wide range of games to choose from - from action games to casual games and more. The community is also a big advantage. As a member of the online community, you get to meet a lot of people worldwide and gain friends or guildmates/clubs and then play together while defeating bosses or finding a rare item. People usually want to express themselves through the virtual world, and online games offer customization through your characters. Game developers also release new updates and content giving you more reasons to play the games and be stronger (or just look cooler with your character.)

One sad fact of online gaming is that it’s not easy for game makers to develop new updates and content. Players constantly want new innovations. If game developers couldn’t give new updates, surely their community (and the game) will falter.

Choose what suits you the best.

GM T: Thanks for the article, Kelvin. If any of you guys would want to contribute a guest post too, just let me know. Thanks

    Hey
    That was a nice post.
    Like the way you wrote.
Online games have been expanding like wildfire lately.
Plethoras of gaming website coming up lately are a testimony to this.

However as a core gamer, I found many of them missing the depth.

Of the many WATGame was the one that caught my attention. Clearly written by a passionate gamer, the articles had that distinctive feel to them.

I would like to know of any more that you would like to suggest on such topics.

    Happy Writing!

I disagree with not updating consoles..

Do note that new consoles are released regularly and that new games are released on the new consoles..

as for PC games, you are not forced to update the whole PC but merely upgrade parts of the PC. Which is so much better in the long run..

    I agree with Kristoph.

Consoles do need updating - either firmware updates (the Wii is guilty of this) or new systems. Whilst yes, I agree the life cycle is a lot longer than the PC life cycle, you still need to update it to keep on top of things.

Personally, I can’t say which I prefer. PC and online gaming is for “serious gaming”, whereas my consoles are around my TV for “relaxing gaming” (you can’t play on your PC lying on your sofa - unless you have a laptop). I usually play my PC when I want to play games, but when I get sick of sitting in front of PC’s (I’m a web designer by trade), I sit in front of the tv to play games and relax.

Good day! Next-gen console manufacturers regularly release firmware updates/backwards compatibility features for better gaming experience.

As for the preference, I played online games a lot up until I got my hands on the next generation of consoles. I guess I’m more into the graphics of the consoles which I couldn’t achieve while playing on my pc. Maybe because I have a crappy pc to start with. But nonetheless, I think I like console games better. But that’s just me. Thanks.
