Apologies if I wasn’t able to update the blog recently. Was in Hong Kong this weekend and just came back a couple of days ago to attend to some official business. Anyways, while I was there, I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the 2011 Gunpla Builders World Cup exhibit at the 2011 Ani-Com expo event at the HK convention center.

A couple of months ago, I purchased this awesome board game from Fantasy Flight, Mansions of Madness. “Mansions” is an H.P. Lovecraft (Cthulhu) themed game where you play the role of investigators. One player will be the “Keeper” to direct the story and progress the plot. It’s a great synergy of table-top RPG and boardgames and me and my buddies, love it!

Anyways, the boxed set came with a lot of unpainted minis. So I decided to try and paint them….

Mansions of Madness Minis Painting (Characters)

Here are some photos of the unpainted characters. They’re all high quality plastic and have passable detail.

After a primer, base color, wash, highlights and dry brushing, I came out with the finished product below…

Meanwhile, I tried to speed-paint the monsters by giving them a flat black base coat and more dry-brushing and some detailed effects…

I also bought the D&D hack-n-slash boardgame, Wrath of Ashardalon. It also came with a ton of minis… will get me occupied for a couple of months! Wohooo!

Then it’s off to go back to table-top RPG gaming with a new gaming group.

Wohooo! Long weekend. Time to catch up on my model kit projects. It’s easy to just buy action figures or statues and pop ‘em inside your display case at home or in the office. But to me, it becomes fulfilling when you do it yourself.

Anyways, this here is part of my haul of Star Wars 1:6 scale vinyl kits. I already finished Darth Vader, Han Solo and Princess Leia. Both R2-D2 and this one, C3P0 will go in simple diorama which will be a nice addition to my Star Wars collection…

After the standard assembly, I primed the kit and then attached the lead “pistons”. Detail on this kit is amazing! After the primer, I then gave it 2 coats of Gold chrome paint (RJ London can spray). Once done, it got 2 coats of clear lacquer to give it a semi-sheen. And then it’s dry brushing the chrome parts to give it added detail;

Once that was done, it was time to build the base.

This simple dio is just 2 pieces of CD case glued together. I dabbed some Rugby contact cement on top to give it texture and then added rocks and simple metal part from scrap. After the primer, it was sprayed flat black. I will then proceed to dry brush this once it dries…

Me and a group of friends recently had a “group buy” and ordered online for a BUNCH of vinyl model kits. I got a couple of Star Wars kits to complete my collection (Artoo and Threepio) while my other friends got their own stuff. One of them got a fine Joker vinyl kit and he asked me to model and paint it for him (since he doesn’t know how).

So, after 3 weeks of cutting, assembling and painting, the work is finally done.

Joker Vinyl Kit (Completed May 2011)

Each was assembled separately, primered and painted with a combination of can spray paint and Tamiya acrylics via air-brush. I particularly liked the chair since I was able to experiment on how to do a “damaged leather” tone. There were a lot of time when I had to hand-paint in details and other layers.

Alas, I lost Joker’s revolver pistol so I had to scratch-build a new one using old plastic spare parts.

My only beef with this vinyl kit was that there were a lot of bubbles and imperfections, vinyl being vinyl, it was hard to repair and remove them.

A couple of years ago, the Japanese built this 1:1 scale classic, RX-78 Gundam at Odaiba’s Shiokaze Park. This was done in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Mobile Suit Gundam.

Not to be outdone, China has erected a flimsy replica at Floraland park in Chengdu.

Note that unlike the Japanese Gundam, the Chinese version is made up of fabric.

As a model kit enthusiast and a Transformers fan, it’s great to know that TakaraTomy recently teased two Transformers Model Kits, Bumble Bee and Optimus Prime. The frames are fully made out of metal and they are all fully posable.

What could’ve been MORE AWESOME is if they also release model kits for the first gen Transformers (TV cartoon series).
