Racists and Homophobes Online

Now they’ve done it!

They pissed off Adam Sessler, host of G4TV. According to Gaming Today, Sessler was playing Xbox Live when a 10-year-old kid started calling him names. Surely, these bigots can’t get enough of ruining a good guy’s day. This doesn’t happen just in Xbox Live, mind you. I’ve seen it (and experienced it) first-hand during the course of MMO playing.

Yes! I agree with you Adam! Let it rip…

Crazy Kart: Level Up’s Newest Game

Woot!

I’ve been on gag about this for the longest time. This project is one of the “top secret” ones that I was working on. It’s also one of the (many) reasons why I go home late from work every night.

But at long last, the information is public and I can announce to the entire world that we, Level Up, have a new game. Please all welcome CRAZY KART - the Philippines’ first online casual racing game.

I was given the honor to head marketing for this game and I have the privilege to be one of the internal beta testers and I can say that WOWWW!!! This game is really fun and engrossing. With an easy to control interface, individual and team “battle mode” and lots of funky cars, power ups and “weapons” for you to use, I am confident that Crazy Kart will go places.

Blogging: Map of the Blogosphere

You’re probably wondering how many blogs are out there right now?

As of today, Technorati is currently tracking around 70 million blogs… with more being added by the minute. If it were a universe, how would the blogosphere look?

Well, these dudes with too-much-time on their hands did exactly that - map the blogosphere with “hyperbolic” data using actual blogs and their links.

Alright… where am I in this dense universe??? It looks like the Milky Way.

Best Feature of MMORPGs?

A lot of online gaming companies are banging their heads to come up with new and innovative features for the latest MMORPGs. No one wants to be another “cookie cutter” or another WoW clone.

Let’s face it. A lot of MMORPGs out there look the same. Except for a new “theme”, new monsters, or some subtle changes in gameplay, it’s not that all different. Go to a quest, kill a monster, get good item, level up. This evil cycle repeats itself ad nauseum.

Some games spend advertising money to harp about the better graphics and how real the light and shadows are. But do the real gamers care?

Meanwhile, I decided to come up with an informal poll on which features of a game would make one play. The choice is yours…

Managing Virtual Economies

Part of managing an online game is keeping track of the economy within the delicate ecosystem of an MMORPG.

This means close monitoring of both supply, demand and the number of rare items in a given server. Fail to this, and the economy will falter. A game with a super-inflated economy will lose players faster than you can say “dupe”.

How do you monitor economies?

Hit jump to find out.

Faster Connection or Faster Video Card?

Here’s some sort of an informal poll.

For your online gaming needs (and if you could only pick one), would you rather have

  • A faster broadband connection OR
  • A faster (ergo, more expensive) video card?

Let’s jot down some of the obvious pros and cons for each…

Faster Broadband

  • Your game won’t lag (obviously)
  • You get to do a lot in less time
  • You can multi-task… open Yahoo Messenger or Youtube at the same time (well, that’s extreme… but you can) while playing
  • Use teamspeak

Patapon

This is one simple, yet addicting game for the PSP.

Patapon is a rhythm game. You play a diety and command an army of tribal warriors which you control via beating traditional talking drums. You have to really “get into the beat” so that they can attack or move. The game was developed by Pyramid and produced by Japan Studios, the same studio that developed and produced Loco Roco.

I simply LOVE this game. Most people in the office are addicted. It received a lot of good publicity and reviews.

Now, you CAN play this game without a PSP… there’s an online flash version.

The link to that after one more click…

The Benefits of Gaming

Sorry for the scarce number of posts these past few days. Veeerrry hectic week at the office with all these deadlines and rush for some major projects.

Meanwhile, here’s something for everyone to reflect on.

What are the benefits of gaming in general?

For me, the first thing that comes to mind is “de-stress”. Games offer me an avenue to release tension and relax after a stressful day at the office. For instant fun, it’s usually the PSP for me. At home, I can get more tension off with either a brainless console game or some killing action via my PC with FPS or MMORPGs. If I’m bored, I try to practice some hard song off Guitar Hero.

More after the jump.

Goal Setting and Gaming

According to naysayers, “gaming will amount to nothing.”

Or so they say.

It just occured to me that goal setting is as important to gaming as it is to real-life. Video games offer you a myriad of choices. First, you can elect to complete it in “easy” mode or punish yourself in “extreme”. Play Guitar Hero and you’ll know what I mean.

This is more true in online games.

Without goals, you’re screwed. You’ll probably end up with a lame character, improper build and gear that’s not focused on a specific task. Well, not unless your goal is be like THAT.

Get More Value for your Gaming Money

Even if the game is Free-to-Play, you need money to sustain your online gaming. If you play at an Internet Cafe, you will spend on hourly rentals - this is usually P20 per hour here in the Philippines.

Don’t forget your essentials like food, drinks and transportation and you’ll only be limited by your daily budget.

This article will show you how to stretch your gaming budget and make your money work for you thereby giving you more bang for the buck
