Alrighty! I finally got time to upload the pics on part 2 of my new 1997 Ford Mustang model kit. In case you’re wondering, you can find part 1 of this post here.
Meanwhile, just a short recap of the first phase of the project: I managed to wetsand and primer the car; did some adjusting and putty for the bumpers and allowed everything to dry and cure. The second phase of the project is to now apply the white base coat in preparation for the MANY layers of paint (just like a real car, damnit!).
Check out the progress photos and report after the jump…

After buying Tamiya acrylics at the hobby shop (clear red, clear yellow, metallic blue and a flat clear coat), I finally did applied the white base coat (Tamiya Acrylic white flat thinned with denatured alchohol) with the airbrush…

I wasn’t too happy with the “paint run” on the hood and I had to strip the paint with denatured alchohol and redo the darn thing.
After drying for 24 hours, I wetsanded the body, the hood and the rear spoiler

Meanwhile, I got this over the weekend from Greenhills, my very own Dremel (rotary) tool set… cool! At P1,500 it’s a steal! Now I can advanced stuff and shiat with this baby!

Meanwhile, it’s time to do some serious masking in order to paint the inside of the engine bay flat black.

Then it’s a single coat of semi-gloss black via the airbrush

Let that dry for 3 hours, take away the masking tape and presto!

Now, it’s time to apply the first of 3 mist coats. The mist coat technique is something I learned by doing a little bit of research. Here’s my guide on the car’s paint job.
Basically, you just spray the car from around 1.5 feet and allow the mist to just cover the base paint. Dry this 1 hour apart and do it three times. But first, cover the engine bay with paper and masking tape

Then do the mist coats. The color of choice is Tamiya Metallic Blue.

Now this thing will have to dry for at least 3 days before I apply the first wet coat… told ya! It’s a looong project.
While waiting, I get to do several funky stuff like painting the brake calipers with titanium steel and orange (the orange was hand brushed)

I also sprayed the engine parts in flat black and semi-gloss black. Here they are before the paint job…

And I finally managed to fully assemble the engine. Once painted, it’s a beaut!

Today, I did the following:
- Applied the first wet coat on the body
- Sprayed the chassis with metallic blue body color
- Painted the body color on the radiator
- And left it all to dry for at least a week
This weekend, I’m planning to do wetsanding, applying 3M rubbing compound and finally, the final wax to achieve (hopefully) that bling-bling finish!
I’ll be uploading the pics soon come next update.
Cheers,
